N.Y. Yankee Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Which knot do you tie in lines like 20-30 lb mono and fluoro for lures and swivels? Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 Palomar for snaps and Improved Clinch for baits. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted August 26, 2021 Global Moderator Posted August 26, 2021 San Diego Jam for everything except braid Don’t use mono for anything Mike 1 Quote
HaydenS Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Polamar, it is a small knot and super strong, so it is good for big lines. I had a polamar tied with 15 pound red label last night, and it took me 5 minutes to break off a snag. I tie a polamar for the rod I use for flipping and big Swimbaits, it has 20 pound red label. 1 Quote
InfantryMP Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 I am old fashion here. Improved clinch for everything except leaders. Alberto knot for leaders. 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 San Diego Jam for FC and Uni for mono. Just a use one or perhaps two less turns. A-Jay 2 Quote
Kenny Yi Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Fish-n-fool for mono and FC, it is a Uni knot but with a doubled line through the eye 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 Swivels, snaps, jig heads, and small lures without treble hooks get the Palomar if I'm using Fluoro. Fish N Fool otherwise, so I don't have to mess with pulling the lure through a loop. Most everything with mono gets the Trilene knot. Though I've been known to switch things around for one reason or another. I like to snell single hooks whenever possible, for instance. And I'll sometimes use a Palomar on mono for snaps or if I need a small knot. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 San Diego Jam knot. Lately I've had to use the Uni knot due my hands being shaky due to meds I have to take. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 SDJ.....Uni and I have used the one Shaw demonstrates. It has NEVER failed me 1 Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 I like to tie knots and break them against each other for fun. Yes I am a loser. But what I have found on mono at least is the two strongest knots are the palomar and doubled San Diego. The fishing fool is a close third. But usually I just tie a uni cause if I do have to break off I want it to be at the hook. Breaking a uni on 20 # test isn’t as easy as a person might think. Quote

However if I did this would the only one one I would switch to. Mike 1 Quote

waymont Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 I tie pike leaders with 30-50lb FC, and found a three turn clinch knot to be the best. The line is thick, and reacts well, and has never slipped. Just wet it well, and tighten it well too. 2 Quote

Super User WRB Posted August 27, 2021 Super User Posted August 27, 2021 Simple knots work good with mono, no knot strength issues like FC. Palomar knot works for terminal tackle like clips, swivel and hooks. Compact knot easy to tie. Tom 2 Quote

This leaves a bit of a bulged stop just in case but never have i seen the bulge tag end ever move. 1 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted August 27, 2021 Super User Posted August 27, 2021 SDJ knot for all lines. Heavier FC & mono only get 5 turns. Quote
li_bass_hunter Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 Improved clinch for that size mono. 5 turns Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 27, 2021 Super User Posted August 27, 2021 Palomar and Uni knots. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted August 27, 2021 Super User Posted August 27, 2021 I always believed in the SDJ knot, until I started to use fluoro. It broke at the knot. Now I use the triple loop (also called triple loop improved clinch) for fluoro and have no more problems. The problem with fluoro is radius of bend. The larger the diameter of the line, the more injurious to the integrity of the line to bend it tightly. I won't use 20+ lb test fluoro until I solve that problem. jj Quote
Hulkster Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 I use a palmor knot for tying 20 pound test Sufix Siege on my pike/musky rod. I can't break it when I get snagged. have to cut it. Quote
