Mtsavage406 Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 I recently purchased FireWire 1010 pound test smoke colored fishing line and I have never lost so much tackle in all my years of fishing as I have in the last month with this line I’m 35 and have been fishing since I was five years old for 30 years and still today I tied the same knot that I learned from my dad the very first time I went fishing and I’ve never had a problem with it but With this FireWire 10 pound test my knot seems to slip or comes untied after I catch any good size fish or get snagged up the next time I catch a fish or get snag the knot or the line just breaks and I Another lure and fish anybody else having problems Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted August 26, 2021 BassResource.com Administrator Posted August 26, 2021 Firewire is a slick line. The best knots to use with it would a Uni-Knot or Palomar knot. 1 Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 If this is Berkley Fireline I have used it for years, probably since they first released it, and have had no knot issues unless I was snagged up solid. The line I used this morning is probably 10 years old and still holding strong. Like Glenn I use a Uni Knot when tying direct and a modified alberto when using a Flouro leader. If they ever discontinue this line I will have to buy up a lifetime supply. Also wanted to add that when new the line can be a bit stiff. After some use it is great and performs like most braids. Super User Fishes in trees Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 Is Firewire and Fireline the same thing? I don't know. Tried Googling Firewire with no results - kept coming up Fireline. Anyway, I've found Fireline to be a great jerk bait line, believe me, if I had knot issues tying on to $15 Lucky Crafts or similar jerk baits I would know. I know it isn't the easiest stuff to tie knots with, the main thing being take your time, tie a good knot and carefully tighten it like you're supposed to. Palomar knots, various line to leader knots and clinch knots all work ok when you take the time to tie a good knot and tighten it down good prior to snipping the tag end close. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 It may not be at the top of the list but Fireline is one of the worst lines I have ever used..... If you are losing lures and breaking knots, I would first try a different knot , like stated above, and then check how you are casting. If you are whip casting, most braids will snap at the knot because all the force of the cast is absorbed into end of the line. I would use some 6lb leader if you are casting this way and are unable to change. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 Like others, assuming you are using or referring to Fireline. That line is not a favorite of mine, but it is one of the better braided lines in regards to knot strength. I will use it trolling, or for some power-type presentations though. Try a different knot; Palomar or Double-Palomar should both work fine. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 The Fish N Fool is my braid knot. In my experience, it holds better than any other knot for slick braid. I do modify it slightly for braid. If you look up instructions online, they'll say to wrap it 5-6 times. And that's fine for mono, fluoro, and heavy braid. But for thinner braid, it needs more wraps. For 10# test, I'd wrap it around 8-10 times. 30# line would get 7-8 wraps. I'm up around 65# before I'm back down to 5-6. If that knot doesn't solve you're problems, then you've got a bad roll. It happens sometimes. I've not run into it with braid, but I've had other lines that seem to snap way too easily, even when brand new. Then switch it out with a different roll of the same thing, and everything's fine again. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 I also assumed FireWire is Fireline and it shouldn’t be worse than Nanofil that I’ve been using. As @glenn stated uniknot with at least 8 wraps is the way to go, or try trilene knot with at least 6 wraps. This type line have absolute next to none abrasion resistance. The Nanofil is one of my favorite for panfish setup and Neko rig for bass leader is a must though. Quote
paulmandude Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Tie a leader to it using what you think is an easy knot. I like the blood knot. Then use your regular knot to lure. Then go fishing Quote
