To do hook changes at night in a windy boat ? Or daytime ?  2 fine tip ...Needle Nose pliers are needed and a small thin bladed knife.  And some practice at home in good light.  1 plier hold the ring. Then a thin pointy knife blade tip separated the rings near a ring end.  Slide the treble hook into the spread apart ring loop. Rest is easy................

As you will find out . You can START the new hook right next to the old hook before sliding the old hook loop too far away from the spread apart ring opening.

A Knife is totally unnecessary.

I've got a small Plano box of treble hooks with split rings already attached.

Same here.  Its tricky on the really small ones that like to jump right off your nail when you try to put the hook eye in them though (gamakatsu magic eyes are great in that case).  Also, if you have to deal with saltwater hooks and split rings they are a lot harder and stiffer I find.  If I'm using a saltwater lure in freshwater I'll just cut the split ring off with side cutters and replace with my own.

For what it is worth, I had way better results with Gamakatsu's split ring pliers than with the texas tackle ones. Much easier to use with bass-sized split rings.

I use my fingernails also. Strike King is about the only split rings I can't open with my fingers. As long as it isn't cold out I can swap a hook in a few seconds without any tools. 

 

I use a mix of EWG and round bend trebles. I don't like EWG's for jerks and topwaters, other than that, doesn't matter either way to me.
