I have next to no dexterity and changing a pair of trebles can take me 20 minutes. I am floored that some guys actually do it on the fly...in the boat. I have tried no less than five different split ring pliers, including the Texas ones. It is not the tool...it is the tool holding the tool. I don't question the value of changing hooks out. But I won't do it if I don't have to. (I also admit to a deep seated angst about changing hooks on a brand new 10 or 20 dollar lure.) I sharpen hooks regularly, but that's about it. I smell what you're cooking and I get it. It's not a one size fits all deal. I've been doing it so long now, I can switch them out in seconds, almost without looking. https://youtu.be/qIcmPirLk9I?feature=shared&t=21 But I've had an obscene amount of practice. cyclops2 Posted February 21, 2024 Posted February 21, 2024 To do hook changes at night in a windy boat ? Or daytime ? 2 fine tip ...Needle Nose pliers are needed and a small thin bladed knife. And some practice at home in good light. 1 plier hold the ring. Then a thin pointy knife blade tip separated the rings near a ring end. Slide the treble hook into the spread apart ring loop. Rest is easy................ As you will find out . You can START the new hook right next to the old hook before sliding the old hook loop too far away from the spread apart ring opening. Quote

Super User Catt Posted February 21, 2024 Super User Posted February 21, 2024 I can open split rings with my thumbnail! Carolann gets ticked at me because my nails grow fast & are very hard. She spends a lot of money on hers. 3 1 Quote
cyclops2 Posted February 21, 2024 Posted February 21, 2024 The knife allows fresh blood to be used as a ...Attractant... on the next use of the lure. 😀 4 Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 21, 2024 Super User Posted February 21, 2024 I've got a small Plano box of treble hooks with split rings already attached. 1 Quote

Its tricky on the really small ones that like to jump right off your nail when you try to put the hook eye in them though (gamakatsu magic eyes are great in that case). Also, if you have to deal with saltwater hooks and split rings they are a lot harder and stiffer I find. If I'm using a saltwater lure in freshwater I'll just cut the split ring off with side cutters and replace with my own. 2 Quote
txchaser Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 For what it is worth, I had way better results with Gamakatsu's split ring pliers than with the texas tackle ones. Much easier to use with bass-sized split rings. 2 Quote

Strike King is about the only split rings I can't open with my fingers. As long as it isn't cold out I can swap a hook in a few seconds without any tools. I use a mix of EWG and round bend trebles. I don't like EWG's for jerks and topwaters, other than that, doesn't matter either way to me. 2 Quote
