volzfan59 Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 I'll soon be rewiring my boat. As I'm primarily a river rat, my plan is to move the t/m battery forward, ditch the old MotorGuide and replace it with a new Minn Kota. I'm also going to add a new Garmin up front. From my reading, I may need to shield the wiring for the Garmin. What exactly does that mean? What do I need to purchase? Thank you for any help. Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted August 25, 2021 Global Moderator Posted August 25, 2021 You don’t need a garmin in the river! Just stick your pole or paddle in to see if it’s 2 feet or 3 feet 1 Quote

Braid as shown in the picture and a heavy foil under it then the insulation. If there is noise(pass an AM radio over the entire length of the power leads if the noise goes up you may need shielding) you have to rely on the total thickness and area coverage. Good luck. 1 Quote

A few of the rivers down here are considerably deeper than what we were used to on the Houston, French Broad and definitely deeper than the upper Clinch! 4 hours ago, MN Fisher said: If this is for the power cable...this is what you want https://www.ancorproducts.com/en/p/141410/Twisted-Pair-w-Shield-14-2-AWG-2-x It is for the power cable. I'll look for it online, according to Ancor's website there's no where near me that sells it. Thank you Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 25, 2021 Super User Posted August 25, 2021 With DC power you don’t high frequency EMI shielding, simple Tin copper tubular braid pulled over the wire/ cable works good. Ground 1 end and good to go. Braid expands about 50% so 1/4 to 3/8 ID should do it for you. 3M has shield tape if you only need a few feet shielded. Tom 1 1 Quote
newbiedmv Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 You shouldn't have a problem at all. The dı/dț (change of current over change of time) is glacier slow for sonar. =long wavelength=5 mile long antenna to radiate. Even if it does, you move the wire six inches away. Sorry did electronic noise suppression before I retired, it comes out here and there. 2 1 Quote
