padon Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 12 or 14 pound sunline sniper. our lakes are fairly clear but do have grass so the 14 pound is fine but i dont wanna go heavier. also sun line is a little thinner diameter than some lines. Quote
KP Duty Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 Running 15-17lb Pline Tactical or CXX. I fish worms and jigs with a semi- slack line it seems, so straight fluoro or copoly is how I roll. Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 Mainly 16# and 20# Sniper. I'll throw finesse jigs on 14# Sniper. For those who use Tatsu, do you know if it has more stretch than Sniper? Quote
Tatsu Dave Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 I use tatsu 10# tied to lure and it works very well for sensitivity and is pretty low stretch compared to mono or hybrid. In our water at max clarity you can see bottom at 3-4' w/ any runoff or storm roiling its about 1-2' max visibility. It works good for my uses and seems to catch even wary pressured bass. Quote
papajoe222 Posted August 28, 2021 Author Posted August 28, 2021 Thanks for all the replies. I tried the fluoro on the reel I purchased (20lb. Red Label), but used a different rod with a moderate fast tip. I also, reminded myself not to overdo the hook-set. I caught a couple of 3lb. bass early in the day with no issues. However, on the last bite of the day, the line broke on the hook-set. Most likely it was my fault as I hadn't retied AND I did my normal (to me) cross their eyes hook-set. I don't believe the line broke at the knot, mainly because there didn't seem to be the same amount of line returned as cast. 1 Quote

Most likely, your line was compromised and got some wear/abrasion on it which caused the snap. I fish straight 6-25# fc depending on the application and I’d say 95% of my break offs are due to this, the other 5% me being clumsy and not tying a good knot haha. Quote
LCG Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 I have been trying both 10 and 15lb big game mono this year. And then switching between straight 30-40lb braid and then back to straight mono. What I have learned is interesting to me. 10lb big game has the diameter of 12lb mono if other lines. It's has been strong and very manageable in my Shimano SLX MGL 71 HG paied with a M-F casting rod. I have used this for 5/16 oz spinnerbaits (actual weight is .56 oz) and 1/8-3/16oz Texas rigged plastics. It has done very well and I think I will be keeping it on my reel. This is the bulk of fishing style and a spinning set up for finesse fishing. 15lb big game mono is the diameter of 17lb line at least and is less manageable on my Curado K 201 HG, but still doable. I prefer straight 40lb braid. Used for frogs, heavier spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, jigs, heavier Texas rigs. Use this set up less often. I have used braid to leader for many years. Love it on my spinning set up and will not change that set up. But I dislike leaders on casting setups. What I found interesting was how the change in line had a strong effect on how the rods action felt different. I liked the effect it had on my MH-XF rod when paried with 15lb big game, but ultimately prefer the straight braid. So now I am looking at replacing the MH-XF rod with a MH-MF/F rod. I tried big game a few years ago but I think I spooled it incorrectly because I couldnt stop the line from blowing up. User error on my part I think, because the 15lb big game is thick but it doesn't blow up on me, just a little harder to manage for me. The 10lb big game I am really enjoying. Quote
BayouSlide Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 Straight 7, 8 or 10# Sunline Sniper on spinning rods, 8, 10 or 16# on baitcasters. In both spinning and baitcasters, the lighter line are finesse or BFS setups. My standard is 10# on spinning, 16# on baitcasters. The only mono I use (Trilene XL) is on UL spinning gear. Quote

I'm sure the regular Uni works too, I just like the doubled line through the eye Bro this is a great knot. I've switched from so many knots. I don't think there's a knot I don't know how to tie. But this one at least as far as FC goes is excellent. I use this and the double pitzen almost exclusively. Quote
