Super User BrianMDTX Posted August 25, 2021 Super User Posted August 25, 2021 He will be sorely missed. On the bright side, he lived a lot longer than Keith Moon and John Bonham. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 25, 2021 Super User Posted August 25, 2021 Very sad to hear. I was not a fan of his work with the Rolling Stones (nor am I a fan of them) but I love any of side work in the jazz arena. Speaking of jazz, his replacement drummer, Steve Jordan has played with many greats including John Mayer Trio. He toured with Sonny Rollins in the 70s opening for the Stones, which is where the connection to them starts. Old Charlie would be pleased to see them carry on with Steve. Quote

The jazz connection was honest and deep with Charlie: from what I've read, he was self-taught, learning by playing along with his Charlie Parker and Duke Ellington records. And his "day job" would fund a lot of jazz projects. 2 Quote

On XM Real Jazz, they've been doing some features on his music as well as artists he likes, which means lots of Ellington and Bird, but he was also a big Elvin Jones fan, so I get to hear a lot of my favorite - Coltrane. Super User Spankey Posted August 25, 2021 Super User Posted August 25, 2021 Was sad to hear yesterday. One of my favorite bands of all times, got to see them a few times. Played Stones tunes all afternoon. Generally do that when these musicians pass. 80 years old. 80 year young. RIP man. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted August 25, 2021 Super User Posted August 25, 2021 I've been a big Stones fan for a long time. I saw them for the 1st time in the Super Dome in 1981 and for the last time in Nashville in 2002. I'm not a musician so I'm no expert but I aways thought the key to the Stones sound was the interaction between Keith and Charlie. When they played they spent a lot of time looking at each other. It seemed like Keith set the pace and Charlie followed in a jazzy improvised minimalist way. That's different from the way most rock band seem to do things and it's why no one sounds like the Stones IMO. Hopefully, the new guy can tap into the Stones magic. I wish them luck but I have no desire to see them live again without Charlie. Interesting side note: Me and my buddy made a special trip to New Orleans to see them in 1981 because we thought they were getting old and were afraid it might be their last tour. 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted August 25, 2021 Super User Posted August 25, 2021 I believe so. Charlie became ill over a year ago, and asked Steve to cover some things while he recovered. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 25, 2021 Super User Posted August 25, 2021 I remember listening to the Stones on the radio when I was a kid. RIP. Quote
