I'm really stuck. Currently using a Lews Carbon Fire MH/F 7 ft rod but I wanna upgrade a little bit. I played around with some dobyns fury rods and they're super nice. I can't decide which to go for though. It'll be a dedicated spinnerbait rod for baits 3/8-1/2oz. Which would you go for? From what I understand dobyns tend to be slightly over rated weight wise?

I'd use a 4-power Dobyns for spinners

By the time you count in the hook, skirt and blades on a 3/8oz spinnerbait, it's actually close to 1/2oz...the printed weight is just for the lead/tungsten head.

Now add a fair sized trailer - 4" Berkley Pit Boss, 4" GYCB Fat Ika, 3.8" Keitech Fat Impact, etc - you're now over the lure rating on a 3-power.

So go with the slightly higher one you're saying

Yes - Dobyns rods are easy to interpret

First 2 digits is the length - so 73 is 7'3"

Last digit is the power - so a 3 or 4

You want the 734 for tossing 3/8oz+ spinnerbaits.

Definitely go with the 734 as the others before me have previously mentioned.  I know you said that this is going to be a dedicated spinnerbait rod, but if you ever get in a pinch or need to limit your rods on a fishing trip, it's a phenomenal multi-purpose rod - jigs, texas rigs, weightless senkos, and even walking topwaters.

I rarely fish a spinnerbait, but when I do it's a 3/8oz on the 3 power. If you're using a trailer or going up to 1/2oz then go with the 4 power, but I promise you that you will like the 3 power a whole lot more for 3/8oz for casting distance, accuracy, bait control, and it has plenty enough backbone to set the hook.

According to your proposed usage, I would say definitely the 4 power, maybe even consider the 5 power if you set the hook hard.

Depending on how heavy the cover is your fishing in will make a difference on which power rod I would use. In pretty much open water you can get by with a 4 power. I use a 5 power & in heavy cover a 6 power. Remember you have 2 heavy duty hooks to get set.

734C will do a 3/8 and 1/2oz with or without a trailer and in decent cover, where you can throw a 3/8oz with maybe a lighter trailer or a 1/2oz without a trailer in open water on a 733C, but if weeds are involved forget it.

Yeah I fish a lot of weedy and sticky areas. I picked up the 734c today, put a daiwa fuego and 15lb invizx on it. Took some practice casts in the yard to tune it in. This thing LAUNCHES a 3/8 with trailer with very little effort. Hope to land a fatty on it tomorrow.

Thanks for the info guys.

Champ 734 is my go too for spinners in this range.

I have a 703 and a 734.  While both would work, I would lean toward the 734 for a 1/2oz spinnerbait.
