Super User dodgeguy Posted August 22, 2021 Super User Posted August 22, 2021 Being that I just warrantied a BPS Patriot for a peeling Wynn grip let's hear it from you guys. Especially those who have Wynn grip rods. At this point I'm unsure if I would purchase another.my other Patriot grip is ok but I guess time will tell. 2 Quote
LCG Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 I have had multiple Carbonlite 2.0 rods for the last 2 years, no peeling and no other issues. Love the Wynn grips and the rods. 1 Quote
Eric 26 Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 I’m really happy with my “Wynn” grip equipped rods. 3 Lews, a Denali and a bbs carbonlite 2.0. Also no issues as well although I don’t get out as much as I’d like. 1 Quote
WisconsinF Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 Think about how many that are on just BPS rods...you're the first I've heard have a problem. I've got a bunch (BPS and others) and not had any. Would not hesitate to buy more. Still like a high quality cork tho.? Quote 1 Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 I love the feel but hate the look of them. I go with the heat shrink X pattern stuff myself on most my rods now. 3 Quote
Super User MickD Posted August 22, 2021 Super User Posted August 22, 2021 I have a couple rods with them, my son a couple, both spin and cast. These are rods I built, not BPS rods. We have had no problems. They will not, as most materials will not, stand up well against DEET. 1 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 22, 2021 Super User Posted August 22, 2021 I swapped my Lew's Winn handle knobs for EVA. When I ordered a surf lure rod from Rich Hedenberg, I asked about Winn grips. His thoughts about them were not good, and I went with EVA covered in X-shrink. Working on a longer surf bait rod, did the same thing myself - cork tape covered in X-shrink. 1 Quote
BayouSlide Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 Lots of Lews and a couple BPS with Winn Grips. Been using them for years without any issue and prefer them to EVA. Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted August 22, 2021 Super User Posted August 22, 2021 I have a carbonlite with them. Several years use with no issues, but I prefer EVA or cork. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 23, 2021 Super User Posted August 23, 2021 I have one of the St. Croix Mojo Yak rods with Winn Grips and I like the grips for using on my kayak but prefer cork when I am on a boat. The grips work well on a kayak as I am always getting the rod and sometimes the reel wet. They stay tacky and do a good job but I would not buy another one unless it was just for kayak use. Quote
newapti5 Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 I love Winn grip or Winn overwrap. Almost all my casting rods are covered in Winn overwraps. They don't last very long (couple of years with moderate usage before peeling off), but I like the tacky feel, especially during hookset and fighting. It is said it could dampen the sensitivity of rods, but in my personal experience, not much. Given the way I hold a rod, only a small portion of my palm get into contact with the Winn overwrap, which doesn't account for much of the sensitivity but provides just enough friction force to fight a feisty smallmouth. 2 Quote

Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 23, 2021 Super User Posted August 23, 2021 What I don't like about the feel of Winn grips, is you can feel the layers shearing under your grip. EVA feels better, cork feels stiff, and X-shrink over anything is da bomb. I made these indexed-position kayak paddle grips with closed cell foam rolled onto the paddle with 3-M 77 spray contact cement, and X-shrink on top. Since I had a bent-shaft paddle for position reference, I always grab the paddle in the right place for efficient paddling. It's also both cheaper and lighter weight than bent-shaft. To get the perfect X-shrink result, use a tea kettle and pour boiling water from the middle to each end. 2 Quote

I hated the winn knobs and replaced all of my hypermag knobs with their EVA/cork hybrid knobs. trying to use the winn knobs made me angry. 1 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 24, 2021 Super User Posted August 24, 2021 Other than being filthy, all my Lew’s Winn Grip handles and knobs are holding up well. I clean them off with a wet rag after every trip. Sometimes with a drop of Dawn dishwashing detergent. I keep them out of the elements when not in use. I prefer the grips on my Lew’s TP1 Black. It has black Winn Grips. They don’t show dirt like the neon colors of my other rods. Quote
volzfan59 Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 The vast majority of my rods are either BPS Platinum and Patriots. I'm at the three, three and a half year mark with no problem with the winn grips or anything else. Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted August 24, 2021 Super User Posted August 24, 2021 I have a Carbon Light 2.0 spinning rod going on 3 years with a ton of use with no problems Quote
CrankFate Posted August 26, 2021 Posted August 26, 2021 I only have one rod with winns and I fished the hell out of it. No problems at all. Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted August 26, 2021 Super User Posted August 26, 2021 I fish with an older friend who has some arthritis in his hands. Wrapping his handle with grip tape has helped him, because it increases the size of the grip. He's had no problems with them. Quote
