Super User DitchPanda Posted August 22, 2021 Super User Posted August 22, 2021 I've been throwing the 1\4oz redeye and traps lately getting alot of bites but having a helluva time keeping them pinned. I've tried 3 different rods and have had losses on all of them. What setup...rod and line...do you fish 1\4oz lipless on? Losing some fish on a lipless is a given but it seems like much more than normal. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted August 22, 2021 Super User Posted August 22, 2021 Are the hooks sharp? I use 10lb braid, medium and medium light action spinning gear and have not noticed any problems keeping fish hooked up. 1 Quote
Deeare Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 What action rod are you using? Extra fast might be too stiff for a lip less. 1 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted August 22, 2021 Super User Posted August 22, 2021 8' Medium light moderate rod and 8# nanofil, sure can sling those small lipless and the bend in the rod keeps them pinned. Quote
Eric 26 Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 I fish my small lipless on a old bps bionic blade spinning rod,6’-6” med power moderate action. Reel has been changed to an older 1500 size Daiwa Laguna with 6 lb Cortland camouflage monofilament. I also fish ultralight (creme) lipless cranks on a St. Croix 6’-6” premier light power fast action rod (moderate action) as far as I’m concerned, with great hookup and landing success. As far as casting gear I go with a 6’-10” Lews Carbon Fire med power (no longer available) but the Lews Hank Parker casting rod available at Wal Mart is identical with the exception of Wynn grips vs Eva, I prefer the Wynn grips. I have a Denali Fission 6’-8” med power that I’m going to put into use for my smaller crank baits this fall. The 2 Lews rods have 6 speed reels and the Denali has a 5 speed all spooled with 10 lb Suffix Advance Mono. I’m going to try 4and 8 lb Suffix Advanced next season. I also fish my smaller square bills on these setups as well as 1/4 oz swimjigs and spinnerbaits. 1 Quote

Super User DitchPanda Posted August 22, 2021 Author Super User Posted August 22, 2021 I've used a medium modfast a medhvy mod fast and a medium moderate cranking rod. Yes the hooks are sharp..I've checked them. I also carry a file to touch hem up if needed. Quote

I'm also tossing 5" Senkos weighted and unweighted Wacky, 5" flukes weighted and unweighted twistlocks, etc on the 703SF without issues. The line/lure ratings of the SF and the C aren't that far apart. Matter of fact, the 703C has the identical line/lure ratings as the 7' Tatula XT Medium/Fast casting rod. So the 703C is 'actually' a Medium, not a Medium-Heavy. I look at ratings, not what words some manufacturer chooses to put on their rods. Quote

I don't look at any of it outside of getting a baseline before buying. I'm almost exclusively Dobyns these days because I know what to expect. I find that the 3 power spinning rods are more in line with a ML. I know some people say the power discrepancy only applies to casting rods but I disagree. A 3/16oz jig with a baby Rage Craw should be fine on a 3sf rated up to 5/8oz but the one time I tried my cast was awful and it felt like the rod would break. I fish Neds on a 3 power. I came from Fenwick though and their rods are stronger than what they say while Dobyns are lighter than what they say, so how it feels to you compared to me might find its reasoning in that fact. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted August 22, 2021 Global Moderator Posted August 22, 2021 I doubt it’s the pole, fish can just throw a trap. They are great at it Quote

The reel just needs to perform casting and retrieving, 6.3 standard 100 size is good. Now we come to the line used. Medium Mod rod with 10 to 12 lb premium mono is what I use ( 11 lb Armillo). Up size the front treble hook from 4 to 6 Owner ST 36 or equal helps a lot. Tom PS, the ideal rod is Loomis PR845C popping rod for all 1/4 to 1/2 crank baits and structure spoons imo. 1 Quote
