Smells like fish Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 I feared the worst for the evening at a pond as I tried my beloved Texas rig with lizards and 3 types of ribbon tail worms in 4 colors. Topwater action was non existent, I then tied on a spinnerbait and immediate action of 8 small fish in half an hour and Also a jumbo crappie. Spinnerbait turned none into fun! 15 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted August 21, 2021 Super User Posted August 21, 2021 Awesome! Took 14 seasons to finally catch a bass in a spinnerbait so you’re doing quite well. That blade combo is solid. When you get the chance, try to and another producer, and that is the double willow. It is usually a combination of a large willow and a smaller willow blade. I am seriously considering making my own from pre-made spinnerbait jig heads and customize skirt material and blades. 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 It took me years to catch my first spinnerbait fish. Back when I first started, I caught most of my fish on plastic worms. I read about others catching fish on spinnerbaits, but they never seemed to work for me. One spring day on Lake Okeechobee, my wife and I were fishing back in some grass when I tied one on. The fish were active and we both caught fish all day. Once that happened, I had enough confidence to fish them. Like most anglers, I fished what I knew worked. If I tried something new, I made a few casts and went back to my comfort zone. Spninnerbaits are deadly bass baits, but they need to be fished right. They should be fished close to cover. The cover could be grass, pads or even a tree stump in deep water. They should be fished slow. If you like to fish fast, you would do better with a buzz bait. You will catch more bass with a small spinnerbait than a big one. One of the best spinnerbaits ever made was the S.O.B. (Small Okie Bug). I downsize the top blade to make them more effective. Getting the right cadence is very important when spinnerbait fishing. Once the bait is "in the zone", it's magic. I find a 5/1 casting reel about right for these baits. Modern 7/1 and most spinning reels are too fast for spinnerbait fishing. Experiment until you find what works for you. 5 1 Quote
Biglittle8 Posted August 21, 2021 Posted August 21, 2021 I'm a spinnerbait believer, I resisted them for a long time because I thought... What would bite this contraption? Now I always have one tied on especially, when the bass are hitting schooled up shad. 2 Quote
HuronMan Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 Nice. I love spinnerbaits so much I bought a mold. A most versatile lure. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 22, 2021 Super User Posted August 22, 2021 I have come full circle on spinnerbaits . When I first got heavily into bass fishing spinnerbaits were my top lures . Then they took a backseat to soft plastics , jigs , cranks and buzzbaits . But in bass fishing one is always evolving and in the last three years spinnerbaits have become my top producer again . 2 Quote
