I got a Shimano Vanford 2500 from cabelas about a month ago and since I got it, it’s been making a weird noise when reeling. It makes a periodic high pitched whoosh and I can feel it a little bit too. It’s at a certain point in the handle rotation when it makes it. If you spin it super fast it gets really loud and still makes it when I take the spool off. It’s still really smooth but I’m just concerned with the long term effects if I don’t see what’s wrong with it. I lost the receipt so I’d have to take in store credit probably and it was the only vanford they had. Might save 100 bucks and get a Supreme XT if I can’t fix it. Does anyone else’s Vanford or Stradic CI4+ do this?

Has it ever been fully/slightly submerged in water?  If so, it probably needs to be cleaned.  You can do it, or if you aren't as comfortable have DVT do it.

Never has, only fished with it once. Been making the noise since I got it

Will Cabelas exchange it?  Mine (2500) is ghost silent.  Makes my Daiwa Procyon sound like an old jalopy.

That was the last one they had but I can see if they have more now I suppose, wouldn’t hurt lol

Every Stradic (plus other Shimanos) I've owned make a slight scuff sound when they're spun fast. Never notice it when I'm fishing. Should be returnable if it's loud like you said. Even quality stuff is mass produced and kicks out a lemon so often.

If you are worried now return now, reels never get better on their own.

Bring it back and see what they can do for you.

My Vanford doesn’t make any sound as your described. If you are uncertain about the reel even if it is just as simple as adding more grease. It is still brand new reel, store credit is better, you can either get different reel or wait until Vanford become available again.

From what I've noticed and experienced is that the a lot of the vanfords have a slight scruff or scratching noise out of the box. No idea why but all the vanfords I've played with had it. Two of my buddies were complaining about theirs making noise as well, probably what you got. One oiled it and got it silent while the other just fished with it until he broke it in I guess. Be careful on Vanford 2000s and below. I know plenty of people including myself with the roller bearing having issues with minimum use.

don't go putting light oil around your Shimano roller-bearing clutch.

Since the dawn of time, roller-bearing clutches and light oil don't get along.

Some friction is required to make a roller bearing one-way.

Shimano's roller-bearing clutch on Vanford, Stradic, shared with Stella, kicks butt

I would exchange it for another and for the peace of mind.  If the second one makes a noise, them maybe consider maintenance on the reel.

Thank you all for your help, I’ll just take it back and exchange it. If they don’t have another vanford I’ll just get a different reel or wait for another batch to come in

Recently just got a Vanford 2500HG on a crazy deal. Label was missmarked, so I do not want to return it. May be able to do an even exchange without the receipt thought. Have you ever had issues with your Shimanos that make that scuff sound. Mine is doing it as well. Kind of annoying.

Did they ever have any issues with their reels? Mine is brand new and makes a scuffing noise as well.

I've had four Vanfords that got plenty of use this year. Sound is subjective to the individual. Keep in mind also that these reels have composite frames and are very light. These are the best spinning reels I've ever owned. I'm sure higher end models are more precise but I'm more than pleased with what I'm using.

I am mainly a BC fisher so the Vanford was the first spinning reel I've own so I cannot speak of other models. As far as that scruff noise mine was making it after I hit a certain point of rotation but it was more like a click noise. My issue was and just happened again, is the roller bearing going bad. First time I oiled it which got it to be quiet but recently it went bad again. This time no amount of oil is helping it so that means I gotta replace it. As far as my buddies vanfords they had initials scruffs but they said theirs went away within use and cleaning.

I have five Vanfords (or six if you count the Soare CI4+, which is pretty much the same but made for JDM) and I haven't encountered the issue described by OP.

Mine is definitely not a click but how could I check to see if the roller bearing is the issue?

Plenty of ways actually. One way is to simply set your rod up with the reel and tie a weight. Pitch it on the floor or wherever and reel back. If you hear a scratchy noise then its bad. Another way is to take a rubber band or cue tip and simply just run it under the area to see if you hear any loud noises. You can ONLY hear it if there is tension at the end of the line as having no tension on the reel, will be silent even if you have a bad roller bearing. Looked at my vanford again and when reeling by itself it does make somewhat of a noise but it isn't enough to bother me. Played with many vanfords in stores and it seems to be normal honestly. It doesn't seem like its a completely silent reel. Unfortunately I have no idea what causes that.

Just realized this is an old post. Just keep in mind that reels made of composite materials like Ci4, Zaion, C60.... , tend to amplify the noise and vibration a bit, leaving the impression that they're not as smooth as metal reels.
