KCFinesse Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 I used to fish a bass club that awarded points based upon the length of fish and I'm looking for anyone that may have a form or particular points scale for this type of tournament. This format had the benefit that two twelve inch fish don't outscore one 20" fish, and the point totals more or less reflect a standard length to weight conversion... It was something to the effect of a 12" bass is worth 100 with 10 points awarded per half inch increment bigger until you got to 15" in which case a "bonus" factor is added and escalates from there to a "double bonus" for fish over 20" etc. I'm considering some of these options for my bass club. Anyone have a format for this? Thanks! -Jared Quote
Logan S Posted August 14, 2021 Posted August 14, 2021 Our club used to do length-paper tournaments during closed seasons, we used a chart of length to weight conversions for every 1/4". When measuring fish anglers rounded up to the nearest 1/4". We had a pretty slick excel sheet that did the conversion automatically and added up total weight....So anglers just recorded the lengths on their weigh sheets and the TD entered them into excel at the end of the day to tally everything up. You don't have to go to that level though, it'd be pretty easy to just provide the conversion chart to the anglers and they can look up the weight values and record those to be added up (I've seen other clubs do this). We've since moved on to catch-weigh-release on scales provided by the club in each boat for paper tournaments. As an angler I don't think I'd like the format you described with points and bonuses etc...But that's just me. If doing paper tournaments and you can't use scales, I think converting length to weight is the next best option. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted August 14, 2021 Super User Posted August 14, 2021 Ive had a few small length tournaments with friends. We just keep it simple. Total length of all fish , which is easy but still fun, or the fish has to be 12 inches or above to count. We do it honor system, just writing down the lengths,!or take a picture of the fish on the tape. We dont have a bonus for bigger fish but we could do that next time…? 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted August 15, 2021 Super User Posted August 15, 2021 Isn’t total length what kayak tournaments use? @Bluebasser86 has posted some of his kayak contests this season and I recall him saying that 100 inches from 5 fish was a good score. Quote

They don't use a points system just length on an approved board with various rules of how to take the picture of the fish as well. Quote

I had 94" the first one of the year, that's my best so far. 1 Quote
HookInMouth Posted September 7, 2021 Posted September 7, 2021 The kayak format eliminates the need for a score. If you do best 5 etc. then bigger fish will count more. It's only if you want to count every fish that you would need to weight it with a scoring system. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 7, 2021 Super User Posted September 7, 2021 1" = 1 point. Keep it simple. 1 Quote
Wprich Posted September 13, 2021 Posted September 13, 2021 I fish fly tournaments for trout here in the southeast and we use a similar format 100 points per fish and 20 points per centimeter. Example a 20 centimeter trout is worth 500 points. We usually set a minimum length for a scorable fish before the tournament. Quote
