Mr. Aquarium Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 What are some special one of a kind lures you have that always seem to work, no matter what. The one you’ve had since your dad gave it to ya when you were a kid.. 1 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 A simple lead-head-jig with a white Berkeley 2" power grub. 5 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted August 13, 2021 Super User Posted August 13, 2021 I catch lots of bass on topwaters so I would say it is my favorite lure to fish with. Quote

He used to tell me if bass were there, they'd bite a worm. And he was often right. Later we discovered the C-rig, but that's still a plastic worm. I finally turned him on to cranks and spinnerbaits. The last time we fished together I handed him a spinning rod with a weightless Trick Worm and he caught a couple before he got tired and sat on the tailgate and watched me. He didn't really want to go, but did for me, and I'm so glad he did. He was gone a few months later. 49 minutes ago, Tatsu Dave said: That was exactly what I started with and later added chartreuse. I started crappie fishing with small white and chartreuse grubs and quickly noticed bass liked them too. As did all other panfish and catfish. I still use them in creeks or ponds where I suspect the bass are small. 1 Quote

Smells like fish Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 As far as my Dads go to lures… rooster tails, spoons and Rapala minnows Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 13, 2021 Super User Posted August 13, 2021 My dad was working and not available to spend fishing time. My mom taught us how to catch fish off the dock using a cane pole and bobber. My bass fishing mentors were Jason Lucas editor of Sports Afield and Red Cowan manager of Pleasure Pointing boat landing. I haven’t used the lures I learned to bass fish with in decades. Hawaiian Wiggler #3 and Wooden jointed Pikie. The 2 lures I have tied on the past 60 years are hair jig with pork trailer and soft plastic worms Texas rigged w/ bullet weight, self taught. Tom 4 Quote

A curly-tail grub on a round jighead was the first artificial lure I ever learned how to use. Yellow was what I think I started with, but quickly learned fish would eat pretty much any color. 3 Quote
Bubba 460 Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 In-line Mepps spinners, both plain and buck-tail ~ although I have not used one in over 50 years I have caught a ton of fish on them in my younger days in ponds creeks and rivers. 5 Quote
Functional Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 Purple worm texas rigged during the day. Black double jointed jitterbug at night time. Those were the only 2 lures he used and those are what I learned on and grew up with. Purple worms we used to get at fishing shows in new york at a booth called "the Worm Bar". They used to sell worms by the pound and wed load up on huge plastic bags. Sadly cant find it anymore but found similar worms. Still working through some of those plastic bags though. 2 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted August 13, 2021 Super User Posted August 13, 2021 My Grandfather gave me a Helin flatfish, that I caught everything on. I don't use a flatfish for bass anymore, although I'm sure it would still work. I do often use Flatfish for trout and salmon. My guaranteed to catch something, is a gold Vibrax #3 inline spinner. 1 Quote

MarkG52 Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 My first thought would have been the Floating Rapala Minnow, then when I was around 14 one of my dad's buddies took me out night fishing and I learned how to fish plastic worms. Game changer for me! Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 13, 2021 Super User Posted August 13, 2021 I think a Cordell Big-O was the first crankbait I ever fished with. 2 Quote

Topwaters are a versatile lure that can be fished all across the country in many different conditions. There are times other lures work better so I use them if needed but I much rather have a big bass hit a topwater than any other lure. Quote

I've had days I've caught spots, largemouth, crappie, bluegill, redbreast, white bass, and small stripers all on little road runners when nothing else really was working. I always keep one rigged up in the spring with me. 2 Quote
