Hello,

So I just a rod from St Croix (legend X spinning) and it’s phenomenal except that there is a spot where the metal tip is missing that clear resin coat right where it meets the blank.

There is a bit of resin there but they just didn’t put on enough. So now there is a little valley right at the edge of the metal/blank. On occasions where the line gets around it, it gets stuck in that groove.

The resin reminds me of the UV cure resin I used from Loon to tie flies. Would that work to cover up the groove of missing resin? Or do I need to order a specialty something to fix it?

thank you!!

You can try it, what could it hurt. You most have some gosammer line to get it the notch, I somtimes don't apply anything there and have never had a hangup on the blank/tiptop junction in 60 years.

So because there is resin on the metal and on the other side on the blank, but just not in the exact spot they connect, it effectively creates a groove much larger than there would be otherwise.

Just trying to see what product I should use to fill the gap.

Another possibility is Sally Hensen nail top coat, available at any store that carries beauty products.  It is UV resistant, dries fast, and is pretty thick, so should fill a gap nicely.  I've used it for similar little repairs.

The groove you mentioned is perpendicular to the fishing line's travel through the guides, how the line could produce a bend with an angle to trap itself in a groove 90 degrees to the guides the line is passing through would require some odd line travel, the guides are supposed to have control of the line with little ocillation, or loops by the time it gets to the tip top and a stiff line shouldn't bend enough to produce your result, hence my comment. I wasn't commenting on you, just the results and how to mitigate it.

Spoonplugger, it probably happens when the line is slack.  But it happens, so what is the solution?  I say filling the gap to make a smooth transition.

Spoon, yes that’s right and it doesn’t happen much. I was testing it with a Shakyhead in some grass and it would occasionally catch then jerk back in my direction. That’s when the line, while slack and coming back faster than it normally would, caught the groove 2-3 times. Not saying it whole happen much while fishing, but the groove’s existence is enough to annoy me.

Mick, I’m thinking you are right. I happen to have both Sally Hansen and UV Cure Resin from fly tying.
