Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 …….. where my wife’s car/charger is going to be. Dang it. I’m going to reconfigure some shelving and put my boat on the other side now. I love LOVE my wife. I will however try to parlay all this work into a new Curado 150… shhh SERIOUSLY. not like the bass are going to catch themselves. ugh. I hate rearranging my garage. how neat/tidy is your garage or storage space? Quote

Super User Bankc Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 I have my kayak hanging from the ceiling on a hoist. It's cheap and effective. Plus my wife is a lot shorter than me, so it never bothers her. I will, however, hit my head on it from time to time. How neat and tidy my garage is depends on when you ask me. Right now, it's not too bad. I cleaned it out and reorganized it last March when I got a new car. Prior to that it was pretty bad, bordering on dangerous. I wind up reorganizing it about once every five years or so. In that time, I take everything out, throw anything away that I don't absolutely need, and carefully plan where everything else is gonna go before moving anything back in. It takes a full weekend to do. I'll even take measurements and draw up blue prints. Then, over the years, it gets progressively less organized until I get to the point where I can't stand it anymore. Then I have to start over from square one. I do the same with the attic. Fortunately, the attic and the garage are both on five-ish year cycles that seem to stagger each other, so I never have to do both in the same year. And while I need, I'm afraid to get a storage shed. 1 Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 Mine are kind of stuffed everywhere - under the carport, hung in the garage, in the basement. I told my wife that I'm planning to get a Dagger Code (whitewater kayak) whenever they're available around here, and she said 'I guess it will be sleeping next to me, there's nowhere else for it.' I'll find a space. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 I leave mine in the trailer unstrapped and covered so all I gotta do is strap it down, take off the cover, hook it up and roll out. Quote
Super User Koz Posted August 12, 2021 Super User Posted August 12, 2021 I store mine in a meeting room at my hotel. I moved to rural Georgia this year and found it to be really strange that homes with actual garages are few and far between. Heck, a lot of homes don;t have actual driveways, just a worn out path in the grass going up to the house. I found a home to rent, but of course it doesn't have a garage. But it does have a screened in porch so that's where I put all of my saws and woodworking equipment, covered with a tarp. My tools are in shelves in the laundry room. I miss having a garage. 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted August 12, 2021 Super User Posted August 12, 2021 Mine sit outside in the backyard. In the summer, I store them in my mom's basement. Quote

I think folks might question my mental health when they see it... ? I keep my kayak hung in a pair of straps I bought for the purpose. It's along one wall, partially over my workbench and partially over some shelves. A couple of years ago, I was awakened from sleep by a horrendous commotion in the basement... one of those "grab a flashlight and shotgun" kind of commotions. Turns out one of the plastic buckles on the kayak straps broke and the boat came crashing down on my workbench and shelves, making quite a mess. At least I didn't have to do any shooting... 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 12, 2021 Global Moderator Posted August 12, 2021 I have a ceiling hoist I store mine crossways in my garage (It's a 52'X25' garage), above my boat. I haven't put it up there recently though, I just set it on the floor in front of my boat since it usually only goes a few days in between use. Quote
Krux5506 Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 My garage isn't the neatest but everything does have it's spot, including the kayak...for now. Maybe once it's not brand new I'll start storing it outside but for now it's doing just fine in the garage. Quote
Holetail Posted August 12, 2021 Posted August 12, 2021 I am waiting on delivery of a kayak and struggling with whether or not to store it outside or not. Have a garage and I can make it work, but will have to do a lot of moving of shelves and such. Back yard is pretty shaded with trees and was thinking I could make a rack attached to a fence. Heard UV is the nemesis of kayaks so want to protect against that if possible. Anyone have suggestions on a cover that works? Thanks Quote

Super User J Francho Posted August 12, 2021 Super User Posted August 12, 2021 I hear the UV argument all the time, and mine have been outside for years. They are in a shaded area, but I don't go to any lengths to cover them. I just store them upside down. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted August 12, 2021 Super User Posted August 12, 2021 Agreed. I've had a kayak on the roof of my SUV's from early March to early December for many years....if the sun has been hurting them, I haven't noticed 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 12, 2021 Super User Posted August 12, 2021 If you are super paranoid about it, then 303 spray is about $20. Quote

I’m sort of shooting for the same idea you have, being able to leave my yak on the roof for weeks at a time. I’m working with an ‘17 Outback and with the yak up there I can’t open my hatchback which is obviously unworkable for a lot of reasons. In addition to the ease of loading, a Hulivator would let me just pop the yak down to the side of the car so I can access the hatch when I need to. Quote

I tend to over think things when it comes to items I invest a good amount of $ on. Quote
TcRoc Posted August 13, 2021 Posted August 13, 2021 2 yaks are under my deck which is also covered by roof so all they get is temp change. My kayak is in basement work shop area of my house on horses.. I’m always tinkering so it’s nice to have it inside and up at a nice height to tinker with. 2 Quote

We're kinda-sorta looking at buying a new place, and discussed our list of dealbreakers. And I said that it was a dealbreaker for me if the house doesn't already have a two-bay garage AND enough land for me to build an additional detached two-bay garage. I am tired of working on stuff outside. 2 Quote

To be fair, you also live up north where there's a lot less UV radiation and in a area that averages a lot of cloud cover. The UV index average in Rochester ranges from around 0-5 depending on the month. For comparison, where I live in OKC, the UV index average ranges from 2-9 depending on the month. And those numbers don't factor in the cloud cover. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted August 13, 2021 Super User Posted August 13, 2021 It was 7 yesterday, 6 today, and will back up to 7 or higher the next week. Our latitude actually gets more direct rays from the sun. Try again. Quote
