Bruce424 Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 i fish a lake called blue marsh. all the creeks are all no wake zones. i think either boaters dont know what that is or just dont care. i guess 5mph isnt their thing. this is just a venting post. i swear this is true. had a guy yell "what.... is this too fast for you" then preceded to do donuts cuz i was staring at him going at least 15 mph. i just laughed it off hoping someone with authority would see. 2 Quote

Super User MN Fisher Posted August 9, 2021 Super User Posted August 9, 2021 Can't tell you how many times my canoe has almost been swamped by a wakeboat going at speed INSIDE the no-wake buoy markers. One reason I'm looking at getting a 'real' boat. Actually going to look at one this evening. 6 Quote
Super User gim Posted August 9, 2021 Super User Posted August 9, 2021 I’ve experienced this before too. A no wake zone does not mean you can go 5 mph. Because that speed still produces a wake. I think some people honestly just don’t know but it’s not my place to tell them either. There’s no wake and then there’s some areas that are minimum wake. Many years ago my Father and I got pulled over by the Hennepin County Water Patrol on Tonka in May. It was a cold, blustery, over cast day with very few boats out. They pulled us over in the no wake zone and said to go slower because we were still producing a small wake with our 25 hp outboard and 16 foot fishing boat. They also checked our watercraft registration and PFDs. Never checked our angling licenses. Verbal warning only. To this day that is the only time in my 25 years of fishing here in MN that I’ve ever encountered authority on the water. Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted August 9, 2021 Super User Posted August 9, 2021 Might be the most "broken" rule in boating. For the times they sit in them (idle zones) and patrol around here, it's an easy "guaranteed" ticket writing day. Just turns out they don't patrol near enough, unfortunately. 2 Quote
newbiedmv Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Semi off topic question . How do to ride out or over a 4 foot wake in a river with a flat bottom boat It hurts me and my boat. Evidently manufacturers are building big wake producing trailered boats now. Quote
cyclops2 Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 There Is a camera function in almost every cell phone. Whip it out as he approaches about a quarter mile away. take a picture of the shore line around him & his wake . Take a picture of your bow and the water. Take pictures as he is getting closer. Take them as he passes to get his BOW numbers. Then stuff the camera in your pocket & hang on. Call the state police to find out who will prosecute the bum with your pictures. DO NOT give your Camera to ANYONE................. Sorry but I deleted all the pictures. ............ My deletor was transferred out of the district. 1 Quote
Russ E Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 No wake zones are only a suggestion around here. A local 100 acre lake I occasionally fish is all no wake. I have seen boats flying across that lake at wot. when nobody patrols the lakes, people ignore the rules. My worse incident in a no wake zone was on labor day at Smithville reservoir. it is a very popular lake for boaters in the kansas City area. I was sitting at the boat dock waiting for my turn at the ramp. It was late morning and I wanted to get off the water before the nuts arrived. A big wake boat came flying through the no wake zone. its wake slammed me and a couple other boats against the docks. Luckily nobody was injured. He made it about 200 yards and Lake patrol had him in handcuffs. 5 Quote

Super User slonezp Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 A no wake zone doesn't necessarily mean no wake. It means the slowest speed to navigate safely. No wake zones on my home water are a money maker for law enforcement. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 Some boaters dont even pay attention to the under water hazard buoys . Ive stood on the bow , waving my arms frantically trying to get them to stop . Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 I have seen people speeding in no wake manatee zones, they have no respect for the environment and only care about themselves. The worst ones are the jet skiers. 1 Quote

I fish on "Golden Pond" if you remember the movie ? ......there has to be 20 wooden vintage wood direct drive boats that won't idle down and one hell of a wake. Not once have I seen one pulled over in the channel and they can not be manovered under 5 MPH or headway speed. Quote

I've been pulled over a few times in a No Wake, on the busiest inland waterway per acre in the US. It's always been because I run WOT until I get to the buoy and then throttle down. Quote

My GoPro is on all the time. If I'm looking at something it gets recorded. Is a video good enough to get LEO after someone if you have their numbers, depending on the offense? I saw a Greg Blanchard vid recently where a bass boat ripped by him very close, total jerks, totally in the wrong. Very dangerous. I would have reported them if it were me, and if I knew anyone would care. 1 Quote

Be glad you are not him. Here he was, in the beautiful outdoors, and on the water no less. Even in that environment he acted like that. As frustrating as it must of been, people like that should be pitied. No way does he have peace when on the water. 1 1 Quote

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 I had to get a wake boater to explain the wake boat to me. I had no idea they fill ballasts with water to make the boat run heavy in the water for a fun wake for them. I get it. Looks boring to me, but admittedly difficult. Looks super challenging. Girls in bikinis apparently love love wake boats. Haha. anyways this gentleman was pretty cool and while he educated me, I educated him. He was pretty unaware of how far and wide his giant wakes go and how they affect small watercraft like my kayak. I don’t really care. I point my nose to the biggest wakes. Might be my imagination, but I get a surprisingly noticeable uptick in fish bites when a big wake goes buy. This guy stayed ckear of the tree line I was fishing. I still felt his wakes, but I’m safe. 1 Quote

I do hate wake boats, but they aren't going away any time soon. There are a lot on a number of the lakes I fish. Just be cautious of your surroundings...keep a safe distance from shoals, rocks, and especially sea walls (the rebound can be worse than the initial waves). I turn to put the bow straight into them, or at least quarter them. I can handle them sideways, but it can be a bit unnerving. Quote

To be honest a bass boat coming off full throttle into the cove I’m fishing makes an even bigger wake than a wake boat. In my opinion. It plows the water out like a sonic boom. I had a bass boat pilot see me hoist out a big bass as he was blasting past. He hit the breaks to congratulate me and find info. He was so apologetic when he saw the tsunami he sent my way. Hahaha. It was epic. Thankfully my kayak is ocean worthy and can handle the excitement Quote

And then there are these……. Quote
