BIGfryFish Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 Are there any good replacements for Cabelas Guidewear GX2 Button Shirts? I knew I should've stocked up before. Now thanks to BPS, all the good Cabela's brand clothes are gone. How well do the shirts below compare? Are the shoulder blade areas mesh vented? How are the pockets? Are they flat, or do they puff out giving more room? Is the shirt materials light & soft? Or are they heavy and rough? https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/redhead-solid-tourney-short-sleeve-shirt-for-men https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/columbia-bahama-ii-long-sleeve-shirt-with-omni-shade-for-men https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/columbia-pfg-bahama-ii-shirt-for-men https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/world-wide-sportsman-nylon-angler-20-short-sleeve-shirt-for-men https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/columbia-tamiami-ii-short-sleeve-shirt-for-men https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/redhead-tourney-trail-plaid-short-sleeve-shirt-for-men Are any of those decent replacements for the Cabelas Guidewear or GX2 Button Shirts? Do other websites gave anything like the Cabelas Guidewear or GX2 Button Shirts? Which ones? Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted August 9, 2021 Super User Posted August 9, 2021 I have several of the Cabelas Guide Wear shirts like you're talking about. It has been a few years since they've been purchased. They've stood up well, they clean up pretty easy when I've gotten them stained, overall a great fishing shirt. However, since I've discovered the SPF 50 fishing hoodies, (I have several, made by different companies). The old style guide wear shirts have been riding the bench for the past couple of years. I find the stretch hoodies, more comfortable overall, they pass sweat better, they are cooler in hot weather, and the hoodie keeps your cap on in the wind and protects your ears & neck from sunburn, so I don't have to wear wide brim hats. I like the wide brim hats, but they tend to act like a sail in the wind, and I don't like that all so much. My advice would be to try one of the newer knit fishing hoodies and then you won't look as hard for the old school button up fishing shirts. As it turns out, I like the fishing hoodies for disc golf also. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted August 9, 2021 Super User Posted August 9, 2021 Simms and Orvis are great substitute albeit at a premium price. Columbia is also an option at a more reasonable price, but like others will note.....hooded cooling shirts have taken over Quote
moguy1973 Posted August 9, 2021 Posted August 9, 2021 I used to wear the button down shirts but have since switched to the tech-type quick dry long sleeve shirts with SPF protection. Easier to find at cheaper prices from places like Academy and Target and they seem to fit me better Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted August 9, 2021 Super User Posted August 9, 2021 Never having a Cabela’s within 200 miles of me I have always worn Red Head and Columbia shirts from BPS. They have very serviceable. Quote
papajoe222 Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 I really like the Columbia shirt. I have a couple of Real Tree short sleeve that I purchased this year that are getting a lot of use. The material isn't as heavy as the Cabela's shirt was and it just feels cooler than most of the other shirts I've had over the years. Quote
GTN-NY Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 I’m really liking these columbia pfg tamiami shirts in long and short sleeve. Very lightweight! Only problem is I feel over dressed for going fishing lol. I’ll watch amazon and sometimes they have certain colors for a lot cheaper than others. I’m trying to find more lighter colors than the blue one in my photo https://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Tamiami-Short-Sleeve-Shirt/dp/B0058YRHEA/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=columbia+pfg+shirts+for+men&qid=1628592783&sprefix=colum&sr=8-5 Quote
BIGfryFish Posted August 10, 2021 Author Posted August 10, 2021 Thx, for the replies so far. But the main thin I like about the Guidewear shirts is the mesh backs, and usable chest pockets. I like having a light breeze blowing into the back of the shirts to keep me cool. I did purchase a couple of these shirts at my local Wallyworlds. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Realtree-Men-s-Short-Sleeve-Fishing-Guide-Shirt/926048925?selected=true They're a bit heavier, but fit well. My main issue with them is the chest pockets. The pockets are too tight to be usable for me. Carrying anything like a wallet is impossible. The pocket is fitted to tightly on the shirt. To understand what I mean follow these steps: 1. Sit up/standup straight 2. Make a fist (left or right) 3. Now press your fist against your chest. Picture wearing a shirt with something in your pocket pressed against you like that all day. Not very fun, and you wouldn't do it. 4. Slowly pull your fist away from your chest about 1-2 inches, leave your fist there. That's how the pockets should be, not too tight or small. That's how the Cabela's Guidewear shirts are/were. Any of the recommended shirts have the pockets I like? Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 10, 2021 Super User Posted August 10, 2021 LL Bean, Duluth Trading and Columbia all make button SPF outdoor sports shirts with pockets. Tom Quote
desmobob Posted August 10, 2021 Posted August 10, 2021 I have a traditional, long-sleeve lightweight fishing shirt from Orvis, Cabela's, Columbia, and REI. By the time I had decided on the Cabela's GuideWear as my favorite, I had enough shirts that I didn't need to buy any more! ? Quote

Super User FishTank Posted August 12, 2021 Super User Posted August 12, 2021 I have a couple of the Columbia PFG shirts and they are not bad but my personal favorite is from Exofficio, the Air Strip shirt. They have several other options but this one is tough and functional. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 12, 2021 Super User Posted August 12, 2021 I seriously think my new Simms shirt adds handsome points to me. It’s a great shirt. I can feel the air movement. My PFD chokes it off but I get by. I have a Columbia shirt that’s good too. Less handsome. Quote
