I'm on the hunt for a Heavy Mod-fast with a lighter/softer tip. 7'4" pref, but a 7'2" would be fine. I'm often covering a good bit of water so accuracy on this presentation is less important than distance. Preferably something around $200-$300. Who makes something like this?

Background - I'm moving to a heavy rod from a MH mod-fast (actually Daiwa Regular) for fishing chatterbaits and swimjigs. The average weight with trailer of my CB's is .75 to .85 oz, and while it is fine, I've realized it isn't ideal. Felt way better throwing it on a heavy, but the H/F is definitely not the right feel for me on this, especially with a fish on. I just got a H/mod-f but it isn't tippy. I'm going to try it out anyway, maybe it'll be fine.

Ideas?

A Dobyns Sierra 734c is exactly what you're looking for. It's rated H/F, but it's more of a MH+/MF; meaning a strong medium heavy with a softer tip. It's rated to 1oz, but you'll find that a 3/8oz bladed jig with something like a Zako as a trailer feels wonderful on it. It is "the" bladed jig rod to have in the Dobyns lineup if you don't want to go the glass route (I personally don't use glass). You can't always go by the print on a rod.

I've wanted the Dobyns 736CB Glass for those lures, but can't force myself to spend that much money.  Check out the reviews on this rod.

Or Dobyns Champ Xp 734c .. that’s what I run with … chatterbait always tied on.

For that price you can get a custom-made rod set up exactly the way you wish, and the rodmaker can give you accurate advice on tip action, overload, weight and flex. Look at Batson and American Tackle (Bushido) for blank specs, then go to rodbuilding dot org for advice on a builder.     jj

X2. I had a custom made for shaky.  It is way better than the other rods that I have been using and was in the same price range.

X3   I had Kistler make a couple rods for me.  Customs based on the Argon blank run around $250.

I called Kistler once to pay an invoice and Trey answered the phone.

Good luck with your rod.

A little over your price range but I have been using a G. Loomis 903C CBR for 3/8oz chatterbaits and it has been great.  It is a Mod Fast Medium but it has plenty of power for just about anything.  The tip is soft but not as soft as say other crankbait rods I have. Also, it's not bad when it comes to sensitivity.  If you are dead set on a heavy rod for the above techniques, then the 847C CBR might not be bad.  If I was choosing for what you mentioned though, I would go with the 906C CBR.  It goes up to an ounce.   The only reason I would see going to a heavy in the weights mentioned would be if I was fishing deep.

Thanks. Same with 1/2?

If I may ask what's your reason for moving away from the Daiwa?

I'm almost always in grass. The MH/R is great, but it's a smidge overloaded on 1/2 oz chatterbaits, and more importantly it doesn't have enough backbone to be able to really snap grass off of it. Often it does, but not enough. So between the slight overloading on 1/2 and the rod going way to deep in the blank to get a grass snap, it seemed like I needed something heavier.

I want the tip soft enough that it's deflected 3-4" during a normal retrieve.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and options.

So as an update, I decided to try the Poison Adrena. While it isn't mentioned anywhere in the description, it says "Big and Fast Moving" on the rod.

It meets my needs, as it gets into the tip a little during the retrieve. Surprisingly it does ok with 1.25 and with 3/8. Great for swimjigs, heavy underspins, etc.

I wish the tip was just a hair softer, and it had semi-micro guides, but it is to the point of just being unreasonably picky I think.

application.
I like the rod and I'd buy it again for a chatterbait rod. And the daiwa regular MH is doing great as a regular and deep squarebill rod.

IROD Gen 3, IRG 754F Magic Stick. The rod specs are fast but in reality it’s closer to a mod/fast swimbait-A-Rig rod that works good for a wide variety of lures within it’s lure weight range 3/8-2 oz.

What you are describing is most likely an extra fast action.  Heavy is a power term, and when you put a light/soft tip into the desription you  are describing a heavy power extra fast action.  If you have something in hand with the characteristics you want try to find a  custom builder who can give you the CCS specs on it, power and action angle.  Then when you find something that you think matches it you can have that  measured.  Without having objective numbers describing the power and action you are dealing with opinions as to power and action, not facts.  How light? How fast? How heavy? Is your "lighter/softer" the same as mine?  Or his?  "Lighter/softer than what?

The fact is that you can set up your own CCS measuring setup quite easily.  https://www.common-cents.info/  You don't need to have the big sheet of pegboard, you can simply measure from the tip to the floor for the unloaded and loaded condition.

If you can find one used, a Megabass Carbon Head Destroyer 'Wild Bunch' would fit your needs. Its got a soft tip, and then loads into a solid backbone. It's also light and can handle anything from 3/8th to 2oz weights. Its sweet spot is right around 5/8 or 3/4.
