VMC are my favorites . The bend by the eye is different and it holds the worm in place better and straighter than any other offset hook I have used  . The Ike approved with the 3 degree twist are good but I dont like the twist so I just straighten them out with needlenose pliers . I was out today and had a gammy tied on and the worm kept sliding down the shank so I switched to my trusty VMC and no more problems .

I'm pretty much exclusive with Gamakatsu but the Bass Pro Hooks are pretty good too. When I worked at BPS after I retired VMC was making all of their bass hooks.

I use about 5 different brands of hooks, because I have a favorite style of hook(s) from each.  I have a high level of confidence in each, and it's hard for me to put a price tag on that.  If you have found a hook that works for you but price is a concern, most brands offer bulk packs.

Eagle claw Lazer sharps are where it's at! Can get 15 packs for like $4 at Wally world. I tend to stick with the heavy duty ewg for most applications. They do have Fletcher shryock trebles which are just like triple grips, same thing too, like 10-15 for $4. Awesome value.

Not at my wal mart. They don't have hardly anything anymore. Last time I saw the guy who runs the fishing dept I was tempted to walk up and tell him he should be ashamed.

I tried eagle claw lazer sharp EWG’s. Great hooks. Better price. But something about the shape of the eye prevents them from sitting right in a T-Rig with a bead. Back to gami for me.

A lot of talk about Eagle claw and I agree with bluebasser, they are honestly great hooks but you gotta buy the right ones. they have to be lazer sharp needle point black platinum.  i prefer these over both VMC and Mustad and they are in all the jigs I pour and tie as well.  I bought a 100 pack of 3/0 and 4/0 Magworm EWGs from captain hooks on a whim since they were so cheap and I loved their jig hooks. I'll never go back. They are stupid sharp, crazy strong and I just grab a new one when they eventually dull instead of sharpening them since they cost so little.

not sure where else you can get them, i bought them a couple years ago and still have about 30% left of the 3/0s and half of the 4/0s

I'm a big fan of Gamakatsu, Owner, and (sometimes) Trokar for most of my hooks. However, like a couple of others have said earlier in the thread, the H2O Xpress EWG hooks are solid competitors to Gamakatsu Superline EWGs for far less cost ($4.99 for a 25-pack). I have only used the 3/0 and 5/0 but they are great hooks.

Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp. It says "lazer sharp" right in the name!!! ;)

Haven't had a problem with them. I don't catch huge fish but I've had some huge heavy snags and I've never bent one.

The expensive stuff adds up. You got yer dollar hook, your 4 dollar tungsten, and a $1 Yamamoto Senko. That's $5 bucks ready to lose.

That is exactly why I’ve never bought gammy or tungsten (and not many yammys either)

Ditto

I use Trokar hooks 80% of the time and 100% Sunline flouro and Power Pro braid line.

I try to save as much cash as the next guy. But to purposely cheap out on the 2 most important parts of your equipment is a heart break waiting to happen.

I've been stuck on Gammy's for years. This year I bought 2 - 25 packs of the BPS EWG hooks just to try as I saw them on sale. They've been excellent hooks! They're a heavier wire than I normally buy but they work well for heavy cover conditions. A 25 pack for 6.79 is hard to beat.

But I still love my Gammy's

My big complaint with Eagle Claw is they rust easily.  I used to use them, and they worked fine.  But then some rusted on me and took everything else in the tray with them.

Mostly I stick to Gammy, Mustad, Berkley, and sometimes Fusion 19 hooks these days and switch to EWG hooks and tie them with a Snell knot through the rear of the eye when I'm worried about getting hung up on stuff.  That and lighter weights that are pegged seem to help a lot.

I might have 3-4 brands of every size worm hook in my box and I couldn’t tell you which is which. I don’t mess with house brands but I don’t break the bank either. I stick to gamakatsu, laser sharp, owner etc & generally buy whatever’s on sale in bulk packs. Can’t say I’ve ever really noticed a difference between brands.

Same here... I have one of those nice Bass Mafia boxes filled with all kinds of types, sizes and brands.

But when I lost what would have been my PB (by a good bit, I think) due to a hook breaking, I wasn't able to identify which brand it was.  An isolated/unusual incident, no doubt, but I would have liked to know...

One that I avoid and I have tried for years to get my fishing partner to stop using is Eagle Claw worm hooks.  He doesn't tend to loose them much and so once he catches a fish or gets hung up the hook is dull and he refuses to retie.  I have seen him set a hook on a fish like he's swinging a murder axe back and still come up with nothing or even (and on several occasions) break a hook on a hook set.   My latest complaint on this hook happened this weekend during a tournament.  He laid into a 4+ pounder, swung hard and lost him because the hook wouldn't penetrate.  Oddly the fish came off more than once and hit it again.  The hook wouldn't pull through.   This cost us a spot in the money.  Bottom line don't buy cheap hooks > buy good ones on sale.

That’s been my experience also with eagle claw bass hooks.
