I recently tried again to try flouro instead of braid to leader but still am not feeling it. For the last two years I've been pretty consistent with 16 & 20 lb sunline fc100 as my leader on my braid. The supposed stretch of the line has been great for me. I have a new spool of sunline shooter 18lb sitting around and am wondering if it's a bad idea to use it as a leader due to its lack of stretch. I'm only considering as it will probably save me from buying two big spools of fc100. Thoughts?

I would guess it will work great. I use sniper for leader material often and it does a fine job. Shooter being a bit tougher should work even better. While I haven't used a ton of Shooter, ill bet you get adequate stretch from it unless your rod is super stiff/fast.

If you really want stretch, skip floro and its questionable knot strength and grab some 15lb Big Game.

Not sure I would want to be using it with a connection knot.  Of course you can use it, just think there are better options.

Not sure the leader will be long enough to be felt..

You may want to look at this

What do you mean you're not sure the leader will be long enough to be felt? I always use about 8ft worth of leader. The main question is, is the leader more likely to break or are fish more likely to get free with the low stretch of shooter. In reality, I'm not really sure and of the floro really stretches much in that small 8 ft section

If you really want stretch, go with mono.  Fluorocarbon, unlike mono, doesn't shrink back much after it stretches.  If you stretch it out fighting a fish, you'd be smart to replace it afterwards, as it likely won't stretch much again before it snaps.  Mono will rebound much better.

What I meant is that 8 feet of leader doesn't really add a "cushion". At that point the rod and drag play a more important part

18 lb FC or mono doesn’t start to yield ( stretch) until a force of 6 lbs is applied. What rod do you use that can apply 6 lbs of force?

8’ of 18 lb test Shooter stretch about 1/4” per minute after 6 lbs is applies and the rod is fully loaded, drag set above 6 lbs.

Tom,

I have a full new $40 spool of 18lb shooter sitting around that I don't want to use straight. Is the shooter going to act any different than say Tatsu or sniper in 8ft increments when tied to braid? Think flipping grass.

If you are flipping grass no leader is needed. Shooter is a premium FC line but like all FC the impact and knot strength is about 80% vs mono/Copolymer line. You can expect about 16 lbs of force or about 2X the rod strength.

Use it or sell in the Flea Market forum it good line.

I'll second this. Big Game has great impact and knot strength, and the price is definitely right.

I also argee with WRB. Fishing grass, no leader needed or recommended.
