Im going to treat myself to a new reel, Im looking at the metanium reels, can I get some thoughts on which one to get? MGL or DC? my purpose for this reel will be my “utility” reel, to go on my Megabass Super Destroyer 6’9” rod. buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, swimjigs, hollowbelly swimbaits, that stuff.

Thanks all

How's your thumb?  You haven't told us anything about your experience with baitcasters.

The best choice will depend mostly on your experience and skill.

If you don't have the experience, you may like the DC better.  Experienced casters have mentioned that DC is their go-to for casting into wind, or casting a buzzbait with its built-in parachute.  Hollowbelly swimbaits cast like rockets, and shouldn't need DC, even casting into wind.  Shimano sells DC as ultimate distance, but it's really a distance trade-off for cast reliability.

If you can set up the reel to fish the range of baits, to me, nothing is more fun in casting than a reel with a lightweight, fast spool - the lighter the spool and line mass, the faster the spool, the less brake needed, the more fun.

Not that everything is about casting distance, but if you have the set-up to cast farther than you need, then you're fishing with less effort, and using your rod control and thumb to hit your target.

Every set-up has a sweet spot, and not far past that is probably backlash.   I was describing to a friend yesterday the reel with the second-fastest spool I know, as, this reel as not for the faint of heart.

I have been using baitcasters for about 15 years, its all I use , I dont own a spinning reel. I dont have a problem with backlashes. I just want a real nice reel and decided to get a Metanium, again. I had one a few years ago. Right now I have a Steez A, and just sold a couple Bantams. I was just looking for others opinions on the new MGL and DC reels. The more I look at them Im leaning more towards the MGL with the brass gears but I learned to ask around before pulling the trigger to soon, thanks

It is no question in my idea, I would definitely will go with metanium DC, Because someday it will make a potential bad fishing day with backlashes, To a great fishing day with heavy bag.

If you can wait until late this year, there is a good possibility a refreshed Metanium DC will be available/announced, or just get a 2021 Scorpion DC right now instead.

I've been a DC diehard for a few years, got a fleet of Curado DCs that are still in rotation.  I was debating this a few months ago and got the Met MGL and had a hard time putting it down.  I have it on a Expride 7'2" MH and it pairs well.  Just got the JDM Met MGL last week and paired it with my Expride 6'10" M and now don't know which one I prefer more.  The JDM version has 30lb Maxcuatro and bombs ⅛ and ¼ baits perfectly.  The US version has 30lb Suffix 131 on it and not real happy with the line, but it is smooth.  Buzzbait and Frog rods I'll keep the DC on, or anything where I'm dealing crazy wind and baits with lots of air drag.  Just feel I can get more distance with DC in those situations.

and here's the fastest reel spool I've ever used -

 - Roro-X BFS spool on magnesium-frame Steez SV TW -

- it's like surf-casting, but with 1/16 oz

I have both and there isn't a wrong decision.

I really enjoy the versatility and performance of the DC in the wind and with baits that catch the wind.

The MGL does better with shorter cast that require pin point accuracy.

My son doesn't fish as much as and he uses the DC exclusively!

Since you are looking at the top shelf, you may want to loom at JDM conquest calcutta 100.

The older I get the less I look for maximum distance, so my opinions are bast of feel, performance,

where I fish distance is not needed, I just like to spoil myself once in a while when I can, (Im turning 60 in a month) so Now maybe instead of replacing my Steez on my Megabass rod I might get a sweet reel for my pitching/jig rod. So Im sure the same reels will apply for that too. I do use my jig rod for smallish weedless swimbaits up to 2oz too.

thanks all

The baits you listed I'd personally grab the DC but either way you go, you'll be happy. The baits you listed you could use anything decent and get good results. There not hard baits to toss.

The DC will help solidify consistency if you question your consistency. If not go with the mgl. Both are great. I'm going to grab the DC met myself and add the 150 mgl curado.

I've really been blessed to have been able to build myself back up after my last relapse. I'm going 6ish years strong no drink or drugs.

Also a ton of people are saying the new zillion is straight money. I'm so tempted to say screw it and cash out on that. I like daiwa just as much as I like Shimano but for different applications.

Can't argue with centrifugal brake as just about the best for spool start-up with big weights.

But I can see a good mag brake working better at the moderate spool speeds where skipping is critical.

The ignorance in this statement is immense. If it's referred to as the mgl and it's Shimano of course there using centrifugal brakes that they have continued to engineer and make better and better. I'm guessing you think thumbing the spool is prehistoric? Lol.

Not trying to be an ass. The gas engine is an old idea but keeps getting better and more efficient. Why scrap a good idea? It's better to improve on a good system than to make a completely new one that sucks. I'm not saying new ideas aren't welcome, they are. But look at it from a companies standpoint.

0351,

Not sure why you sold the Bantams, I'm assuming they are the newer 18 model. I have a couple, three of both the 18 Bantam and the 20 Metanium. Both are very fine reels. I just don't see much performance difference comparing the Bantam to the Metanium.

Ahyup, and is that the pot calling the kettle black? You asked about the Met's... I gave you my opinion.

I have both of the reels you asked about. I use the DC for high air resistance baits and when the wind is up. The mgl is a great reel that I will use for just about anything that I want to tie on and any technique I feel like throwing. The only down side to the reel the I find for me is the small line capacity. And that is only if I have a couple of break offs.
