cyclops2 Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 I know we can not poison all the weeds in the lakes. Or will the green slime be eaten by the gangs of different mussels ? I need to hear some good news.. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted July 31, 2021 Super User Posted July 31, 2021 The only species of carp that will eat filamentous algae is Grass Carp - which is considered an invasive species. I'll put up with the native algae rather than have another invader muck up the waters. Muscles, clams, etc are filter feeders, so the only algae they eat is the type that floats free in the water. Anchored algae like F.A. is pretty much ignored. Quote
cyclops2 Posted August 1, 2021 Author Posted August 1, 2021 At the rate these slimes are smothering everything here. Grass carp will be my only gamefish. I will check out the surrounding bays for how fast the slime is moving. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted August 1, 2021 Super User Posted August 1, 2021 Neither can carp. 1 Quote
Super User Spankey Posted August 2, 2021 Super User Posted August 2, 2021 I have that area on my bucket list of places to come up and fish. Thought maybe a few days up there trying to figure them brown fish out and catch a few nice ones for my efforts. Not into carp or slime. So much for “I Love NY”. The fish kill is a real shame but they are not born at 3 or 4 lbs. where are the 1 and 2 lb. fish. I’m not trying to be funny. Why can’t these fish be caught? Quote
Super User Spankey Posted August 2, 2021 Super User Posted August 2, 2021 Even though this thread does not sound all that inviting. I would not let it stop me from fishing up there. Something could be figured out to boat something. That place got Greenies up there also. They all can’t be dead. 1 Quote

They are catching the mess out of them up there , I’d say strike while the iron is hot Quote

Why can’t these fish be caught? I saw a few different pros catch lots of 1-2 lb fish in their practice videos. They just don’t help at all at the weigh in because the fishing is so phenomenal Quote

Super User Spankey Posted August 2, 2021 Super User Posted August 2, 2021 Over the years I’ve caught a few while Smallie fishing. On light line. They are a handful and then some. They will hit a Rapala and Power Grubs. No doubt about it. I really don’t know about your carp situation. Or the Smallies for that matter. But I’d still like to give it heck. I understand about your fish kill but this can’t be every happening every weekend. 2 Quote
cyclops2 Posted August 3, 2021 Author Posted August 3, 2021 That is the VERY scary part about the weed change to a thin green carpet of slime. It used to be a carpet of 12 to18 " long blades of grass. It was BORING to fish it. 4 to 10" fidh of all types in it. I once put 4 small plastic skirts on. 4 fish on and of on the way in. sometimes 2 different types together. It was that fantastic. With septic sewage feeding the weeds. 4 or 5 assorted pike in a choice 100' circle. I would wind drift thru the crowd. None now. We are missing a lot of fish. BUUTT Each bass tournament still has 3 or 4 guys doing a quick lap around the bay. Not catching this year like others. I asked them. Quote
