HawgHunter13 Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 I’m thinking about getting a dedicated frog rod. I currently use a st crowd mojo sc111 blank M/H fast action 7’1. It Works great for loose cover and open water walking action. My other setup is a major craft benkei bic 69 fr frog game. now the thing that’s on my mind is …. Is it worth getting a dedicated frog rod when I have these two that work well? I love my mojo for jigs and during the summer I basically have a frog tied on. Has anyone even heard of the benkei I have? Thoughts on that if so? I understand that I don’t really need another frog rod when these two work but I guess it’s just the sickness of having specific rods for lures. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted July 27, 2021 Super User Posted July 27, 2021 No experience with either of the rods you mention. But my first thought is why buy another frog rod if those 2 rods work well for you.? Personally, I like a longer frog rod, mine is 7'4", there are others her that use a shorter, and longer rods. So my vote is to keep what you have and have fun. 2 Quote
HawgHunter13 Posted July 27, 2021 Author Posted July 27, 2021 I like 7 ‘ rods because I’m not the tallest person and they seem to be easier to walk baits for me. You are correct hammer, I do not need another rod because they work but hey! Why not have a frog rod to free up my mojo Quote

Yes, a year or two ago I was on the hunt for a short frog rod and found that MC model. I ended up with an even shorter BLX but in general I have found that I prefer slower tapers for frogging. 1 Quote
Super User ATA Posted July 27, 2021 Super User Posted July 27, 2021 I dont know your rods also, But believe it or not I am using 8' XH curado for my frogging, It might be look crazy but being in SoCal and the lakes I visit it helps the casting distance and pulling the bass out with all if that salad. Sometimes you need to pull 5lb grass with and 3lber bass. The line is 65lb Maxquatro and not failing so the rod I have. Quote

Super User FishTank Posted July 28, 2021 Super User Posted July 28, 2021 I have been using a G.Loomis 844C IMX for about 15 years with 50lb braid. I like the taper of MBR series rods. I have tried a few Mod. rods and didnt care for it with. topwater. Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 Always interesting to see threads like this..."which rod..." I'm part tight-ass, part "lover-of-old-things-you-can't-get-anymore"... I'm still fishing my Cabela's branded rods purchased in the 1990's -- have five different bait-casters, and six different spinning rods. I see a thread like this and think, "Just fish what you got...no need for something new." But then again, I'm a complete hunting-clothing-*****! Always looking for another pair of hunting pants to suit a certain need...don't get me started on Gore-Tex...I got more than a normal person should ever think of owning : ) [when I die, my wife is going to have a heart-attack digging through all the bins in the basement...I can hear her now..."why did he need ELEVEN hunting coats???"] That said...research more, and enjoy your new Frog Rod! 2 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 28, 2021 Super User Posted July 28, 2021 I use a Cabela's XH-XF 7-3 frog-specific rod. It's stiff as a pool cue. But I'll still use it for flipping T-rigs when the water is too cool for topwater action. But I mostly frog fish on top of lilies or weed mats. It's nice to have that fast tip and backbone to drag the fish and 5 lbs. of vegetation out of the slop. I recently switched to a Booyah junior size frog because I was missing a lot of bites on the popping Pad Crasher. So I put my jig on my XH-XF frog rod and I put that small frog on my H-F jig rod because it has a better tip. I'm going to experiment with these. 1 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted July 28, 2021 Super User Posted July 28, 2021 I have (had) the 7'-01" MH/F Mojo Bass rod. I loved it for spinnerbaits. I tried using it for frogging. I broke it about 2 feet from the tip. My fault. I bought the 7'-03" H/M Mojo Bass Glass rod, and have had absolutely no problems with it. Not one. BTW ...... I always use braid for frogging, and the fiberglass rod seems to work better overall. jj 1 Quote

Doubt many others would have either. Learn something new every day. Thanks for giving another option based on actual experience. 1 Quote

Dye99 Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 I switched over to a cashion elite frog rod this season. Extra heavy 7.4 That thing slays, I fish the slop when using frogs and I dont care how deep they go in the soup, I can yank em out... Quote
Deephaven Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 I use a 7'10" (built to fit in 8' rod lockers) GLX 904C. In hindsight, now that boats have longer rod lockers I wish it was longer. For walking/popping frogs I have a slightly lighter action SC MH that is 7'10" as well. The lighter rod isn't as good deep in the slop, but when you are that deep you aren't walking or chugging much anyways. The two make a killer combo. Quote
Scott804 Posted July 28, 2021 Posted July 28, 2021 I tried out a friend of mine's Dobyn's Fred Roumbanis Frog Rod and it was spectacular. Made me really want one but I have not dived deep enough into froggin' to be able to drop that type of money on a frog rod, but that thing was sweet and definitely made me want a frog specific rod. Great rod if you are interested at that pricepoint though. 7 hours ago, the reel ess said: I recently switched to a Booyah junior size frog because I was missing a lot of bites on the popping Pad Crasher. Around the size of those Jr frogs but it weighs 1/2oz and walks way way way way better than some of the smaller frogs on the market that can be a pain to get walking right. 2 Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted July 29, 2021 Super User Posted July 29, 2021 I like longer rods in general, all of mine are at least 7'. My frog rod is 7'4". You don't have to spend a lot since sensitivity is irrelevant, buuuuut finding the right action and balance you like can be hard. I fished an Abu 7'6" HF Vendetta for a while. Had plenty of power but was tip heavy, made walking a frog for hours very exhausting on my wrist. The tip itself was also non-existent so any frog under 1/2oz didn't load it enough to make accurate or far casts. I currently use a 7'4" HF Daiwa Tatula (older version). Enough tip to cast lighter frogs, light and balanced well so it doesn't wear me out as fast, and plenty of power for hooksets and horsing fish. Straight 65lb braid always. I punch with the rod too. Yeah, I saw that Terminator has a junior sized frog in 1/2 oz. as well. 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted July 30, 2021 Super User Posted July 30, 2021 Make sure to get a rod with a strong backbone so you can set the hook hard when frog fishing. Quote
desmobob Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 I use a Kistler KLX 7'3" HMF and it gets the job done. It feels like a pool cue when casting lighter frogs but it does a great job hauling fish out of the thick stuff. Quote
