Super User jbsoonerfan Posted July 25, 2021 Super User Posted July 25, 2021 Has anyone watched much coverage of the Olympics so far? I have watched a few different events so far. Those guys that play water polo are phenomenal athletes, to tread water and swim back and forth as much as they do is pretty incredible. Fencing, well that was different to say the least. The cycling made my legs hurt just watching it. The volleyball (both beach and indoor) are played by some GIANTS!!!! Watched some of the archery, diving, skateboarding and softball as well. I like to watch some of the sports that you never get to really see on TV. 5 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted July 25, 2021 Super User Posted July 25, 2021 Did you see any of the rapid-fire pistol or free rifle events? jj Quote

It's hard to figure out what they are even showing at most times, just have to flip through the channels to see what's on as the guide is almost useless. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted July 25, 2021 Global Moderator Posted July 25, 2021 I only watch when I’m at moms house because she loves it. Ive never really enjoyed the olympics, we watched some people kayak down an artificial river earlier……….. what in the heck 1 1 Quote
huZZah Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 Yeah the kayaking was insane. Looked fun though. I like watching the Olympics. It’s fun to see people dedicated to their craft. Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 Have not watched one minute of the Olympics...and not much TV for that matter. Too many projects, side gigs, work stuff...oh, and fishing(!) : ) Network TV stinks. Too many commercials...too much politics. I would rather pull up a youtube video and learn something, or listen to a book on audible. Just got done with Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West. d**n good book! 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted July 26, 2021 Super User Posted July 26, 2021 I enjoy it. Mostly because USA dominates the summer olympics and usually leads the medal count. My favorite events are swimming, track, and women’s gymnastics. I used to be a competitive swimmer. There’s really no other sports on right now either other than baseball which is like watching paint dry. I was watching badminton earlier today. I didn’t realize that some of these activities were even events. 1 Quote

I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole once of micro fishing in Japan, they take it to an entirely different extreme. Bass resource may have even been how I slipped into this rabbit hole, I can’t remember 1 Quote
desmobob Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 The USA swept the skeet competition with a gold in mens' and women's. The women's favorite to win gold, from England, got knocked out of the competition by testing COVID19 positive when leaving for Tokyo. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted July 26, 2021 Super User Posted July 26, 2021 I hope the USA wins the most Gold Medals and most medals like it usually does. 1 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted July 26, 2021 Super User Posted July 26, 2021 I really prefer Winter over Summer and politics are killing this for me. One rub I have is that many athletes representing other countries are also American citizens. Many more have gone to school at D1 universities with American coaches, and most on scholarship. It's kind of hypocritical! 4 Quote

I might have heard wrong though. 1 Quote

Yes, that's been going on for quite some time. I remember Mark Aguirre and Cedric Ceballos (two well known NBA players at the time) being invited to play in the 92 Olympics for Mexico. Both had fathers born in Mexico. Quote

It can actually go back several generations in some countries. Quote

I would imagine there are lots of Europeans that have inhabited the same areas for a dozen generations or so as well. Define 100% native ………. Do Australian aborigines compete?? Quote
Super User gim Posted July 28, 2021 Super User Posted July 28, 2021 The American dominance in the pool so far is very satisfying to see. Really the only country that can even remotely compete with us in the water is Australia. 1 Quote

Don't they watch the news? Yer gonna lose! Not a fan of the olympics. Would be interesting to be there though, but nah. I don't have cable TV anyways. 20 hours ago, throttleplate said: kinda like the miss universe pageant, every woman is 1/2 this and a 1/4 this nationality. No one is really 100% native anymore. Super User Columbia Craw Posted July 30, 2021 Super User Posted July 30, 2021 I’m a fan. I know it’s political. It always has been. Ask Jesse Owens but these athletes have purposed their lives to compete and I choose respect that. 2 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted July 30, 2021 Super User Posted July 30, 2021 Interesting to see this thread about these fantastic US athletes, most young and other threads where we see chatter about the entitled generation who don't work hard etc.... I like the olympics winter and summer and watch them all. The best thing to happen so far was the women's road cycling race winner. Basically the biggest underdog story in probably all of sports. She was a solo rider, not from a huge team and she was on a breakaway. The majority of her group got pulled back but she kept going. She had such a solid lead that when the second place person, the favorite, came across the line she actually thought she won and had her hands raised in triumph. All the while over a minute earlier the race was already won. 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted July 31, 2021 Super User Posted July 31, 2021 As an ex hockey player, I prefer the winter Olympics. But honestly, since pro athletes were allowed to participate it has lost its luster for me. Case in point, the 1980 Olympic hockey team. Just a bunch of no name college kids that took on the world. And to this day I can still name just about every player on that squad off the top of my head. 2 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted July 31, 2021 Super User Posted July 31, 2021 The good stuff is yet to come. Quote
