cyclops2 Posted July 25, 2021 Posted July 25, 2021 I seem to be getting a faster build up of black dry stuff on the sparkplugs after4 to 7 hours of trolling at the slowest speed possible. The carburetor plate is closed completely. I have a wide range of mixture screw adjustment.. It takes for ever to warm up a shut down engine after 1/2 hour of being stopped. Any brands of oil burn cleanest ? When trolled a lot ? I am using Marine High Test non Ethanol. Quote
cyclops2 Posted July 25, 2021 Author Posted July 25, 2021 Believable & logical results were found since I posted. British guy ran a test in clear glass jars. Gas only... 2 stroke mixed at 50 : 1.... 4 stroke mixed. 6 weeks later they show no separation. It agrees with more technical statements by oil companies. Both oil & gasoline come from the same CRUDE stocks in the ground. Bingo They are mixed by Nature. I can remix them confidently. WAHOO I am doing about 70 to 1 ratio for trolling in the 10 gallon tank. My reserve 6 gallon tank has 50 to 1 for high speed running. That way I use up both tanks more often. Only took me 83 years to figure this one out. I run my 5 & 10 gallon tanks dry before winter storage. 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted July 26, 2021 Super User Posted July 26, 2021 I sure hope they stay mixed. I've got a can of that stuff for my weed whacker that usually goes about 3 years before being refilled. With a little gas stabilizer, it seems to go the full 3 years without any problems. Probably not best practice, but my last weed whacker lasted about 15 years, or five gallons. 1 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted July 27, 2021 Posted July 27, 2021 I agree with Bankc...it stays mixed. Weed eater, blower and my 40+ year old Lawn Boy are all two stroke. My little 2 gallon can will last all year. My 3 gallon fuel cell for the 1974 Mercury 20HP has sit with gas-oil mix for two years...engine fired right up...and ran that tank dry over the course of last year. No problems. One note: I always run ethanol free fuel in all my small engines! Quote
cyclops2 Posted July 27, 2021 Author Posted July 27, 2021 i In N J we only have 10% E gas for decades. I have loads of generators, mowers, wackers & cars. I have found that they NEVER have a carb problem. ....... IF I remember to turn off the fuel feed valve & run the engine dry. Some are over 40 years old. The outboard that is in storage IS COMPLETLY drained of fuel. Tank, line and engine. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted July 28, 2021 Super User Posted July 28, 2021 No way. It can’t. I buy the high end ready mix stuff. High octane and ethanol free. A can last a year. No issues. plus guys winter their boats. Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted July 28, 2021 Super User Posted July 28, 2021 For trolling, you would be better off running pure synthetic. It's pricey, so you probably would not want to use it all the time, but it's going to greatly reduce carbon. Also, you might want to look at using a 100:1 mixture for your trolling. That's what many of oil injection systems did, 100:1 at idle and 50:1 at rpm. That's how OMC came up with their VRO logo, Variable ratio oil injection. The more fossil based oil you use, the greater the carbon buildup. If running gaped spark plugs, indexing them so the opening is facing the boost port also helps. Running tier 1 gas also helps, a lot. Quote
cyclops2 Posted July 29, 2021 Author Posted July 29, 2021 First time I heard of synthetic 2 stroke oil. I have no idea where my gaps should be facing on my 1988 Evinrude 30 hp. I have a excellent old 2 stroke mech O B. I found recommended NGK plugs & a idle mixture setting that burns off 1/2 of the insulator no wetness . just a light brown center. I troll 2 to 4 hours a day, none stop. I am doing 70 to 1 ratio as a compromise. What 2 stroke Synthetic do you use ? Quote
newbiedmv Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 in the late 80's kinda yep sort of. Put junk exxon oil in the tank. 20 min later it was locked up. Oil was the reason. Since then no but i run the carbs dry every year and drain the bowls. Quote

The book says .030, but personally I think 2 strokes just make for ugly spark plugs compared to what we're used to seeing out of modern 4 stroke engines. @Way2slow had a good suggestion with switching to synthetic. Super User Way2slow Posted July 29, 2021 Super User Posted July 29, 2021 I run a good grade of blend, I don't troll and other than no wake and initial warm up, I seldom idle. There are several different brands of synthetic, just finding it local and not have to pay shipping might be the problem. When you figure close to $40 a gallon plus shipping, that's expensive. If you position the plugs so the gap is facing about 3:00 you should be fairly close. Now, to do this, it usually takes two or three sets of plugs or special washers. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 29, 2021 Super User Posted July 29, 2021 Maxima Castor 927 is a good 2 stroke synthetic oil. Tom Quote
