Super User DitchPanda Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 So I've always just used the typical 1/4oz rebel pop r style popper. Never stepped up into the 1/2oz or up territory. Any favorites in that range? Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 Megabass Pop Max Or the similar and more budget-friendly River2Sea Bubble Walker 80. I think a big popper ought to walk well and easily, and these do. 4 Quote
rtwvumtneer6 Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 I don't fish a ton of poppers but the Berkley Bullet Pop 80 size works for me when I get the itch. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 Another vote for the Megabass Pop Max ~ https://youtu.be/6Ds4Z22ywnY?t=138 Fish Hard A-Jay 4 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 I have the magnum size Pop R. It casts great, but it doesn't sound the same or get many bites. I like the Chug Bug. It's 3/8 oz. I think. Other than that I have a Hula Popper. But the skirt always deteriorates on those over time. 1 Quote
mcipinkie Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 There is nothing like the old P70 Rebel Pop R. I haven't tried the new P71 or the Magnum Pop R. I have hopefully enough real P70's to last me the rest of my life. I trim the bottom lip until it's basically gone so the lure stays up and bloops nice. No 2 hooks, big feather on the back. To me the old P70's are more valuable than old Wiggle Warts. IMHO, for what it's worth: I don't want a popper to walk. I want it to bloop. 30 lb braid with 20 lb Big Game leader tied tight to the lure. If I want a walking lure, I'll throw a Spook. 4 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 The only poppers I bother to carry anymore are the Megabass PopX (1/4oz) and Pop Max (1/2oz). They're expensive, but it's very hard to snag and lose them and they do everything well. I do usually prefer 1/4oz especially early and later in the year (very effective later in the year as the water gets into the 40s!) but 1/2oz produces well later in July and August and earlier September. Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 I can honestly say that I never had luck with large poppers. Popper fishing is what got me into bass fishing. My best was a Zell Rowland signature Pop-R in 1/4 oz. Best retrieve was a semi-slack line and you snapped your rod. The line slapping the water was louder than the pop of the lure. The lure should sound just like a bluegill or other sunfish sucking down a mayfly. Like you take your tongue and afix to the roof of your mouth and open your mouth to “pop” it. The least amount of sound you can make was more effective 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 I have a large Rebel Popper . Dont know what it is called . Also a large Pico Pop . These lures spit water 6 foot or more with sharp, short snaps of the wrist . Back when I could fish during the hot summer days , I used those two lures a lot in standing timber . Had several 50 plus days with them but not a lot of keepers . Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 Pop Max Splash Back 70 and 90 Quote
jtharris3 Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 The Berkley Bullet Pop has become a favorite of mine this year. I normally throw the 70 and the 80. The 80 is a large bait but it gets bites. My go to for many years has been the Pop R. Quote
Happybeerbuzz Posted July 23, 2021 Posted July 23, 2021 Lately I have been reaching for an Arashi Cover Pop. The only complaint I have about it is the limited colors. Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 I've used the skitter pop, chug bug, and hula popper, but I've had the best luck with a pop-r. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted July 23, 2021 Super User Posted July 23, 2021 I can neither confirm nor deny that Lanier spotted bass really like the large saltwater Chug Bug 2 Quote

Super User ChrisD46 Posted July 25, 2021 Super User Posted July 25, 2021 *Storm Arashi Cover Pop - Bluegill color . If Ott Defoe (a.k.a. the voice of: "Hank Hill - The Propane Salesman") says it's good - then it's good ! Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 26, 2021 Global Moderator Posted July 26, 2021 Bubble Walker 80 is one of my favorite poppers ever. Also not exactly a standard popper, but the Berkley Cane Walker does spit quite a bit when it's twitched and has a large profile. It's more in the pencil popper category though. Quote
thediscochef Posted July 26, 2021 Posted July 26, 2021 No lie my only catch on a popper was a larger (3") rebel baby bass that had a sinker on it. That setup pulled up a 16" channel cat on the first day of summer at like 11am. Haven't caught anything with it since. But I've been much more focused on chatter and finesse setups Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted July 28, 2021 Author Super User Posted July 28, 2021 Well I have a new rebel P 71, a R2S bubble walker and an 80 size Berkley bullet pop in my TW cart. Should be a good start. Quote
