David 7 Posted July 17, 2021 Posted July 17, 2021 Next month I will be doing some saltwater fishing. My wife is from Long Island and we will be visiting family. I’m going on a fishing charter for the day, and once I pick up the hang of it I would like to buy a saltwater rod and reel for future excursions (my in laws have a boat). The charter will be present an opportunity for fluke, porgies, sea bass, stripped bass, bluefish, weakfish and more. I have no idea what to expect but all tackle will be provided. Has anyone done these types of trips? 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 17, 2021 Super User Posted July 17, 2021 It’s been a while since I did a charter, but it was a ground fishing charter out of Kennebunkport. We went out of the Kennebunk River and went to Jeffrey’s ledge and caught cod, haddock, pollock, cusk and I think even a wolffish. The captain had a rod and real ready in case we had an occasional shark swim by. Mako and blue are the usual ones in that area with great whites making their presence up here the past few years. It was a fun trip none the less. Striper and blue fishing is a totally different technique than ground fishing so that is done by guides who strictly target them. You’re really gonna enjoy that trip for sure. I’m mostly ground fishing up here in Maine but do switch over to striper fish when the seas get amped up. Yesterday was really lumpy out there and we turned around when we started seeing whitecaps. Went back into the bay and had fun with schoolie stripers. Good luck! 2 Quote

This one will be out of Port Jefferson which is also where I was married. Last time I caught a bride, hopefully this time I’ll catch another prize ? 2 Quote

The tackle can vary quite a bit depending on what and where you are doing it. Plan on bottom fishing with 3 -8 oz, and throwing (or trolling) 4-6 ozs for striped bass, bluefish, black fish, sea bass, fluke, and the occasional other as well. 1 Quote
HaydenS Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 Keep us update on how you do! These charters look like a great time, you should have a ton of fun! Also, If you go out with a guide, ask him if you can use the spots he shows you, when you go out there by yourself. If he says no listen to him, he uses these spots to make a living, so don't steal them from him. Find areas similar to what he shows you, but don't use his exact spots. 1 Quote

I live upstate and only go to Long Island when visiting my in laws. Thinking about using this charge annually if I like it, but either way definitely won’t be stealing his spots. 1 Quote

I've never been salt water fishing, it also looks really fun! 1 Quote
