huZZah Posted July 15, 2021 Posted July 15, 2021 So I have 10 setups for bass. 5 from 15-20 years ago and 5 newer. Yesterday I realized and recognized that I was tired of worrying over what setups to take with me cause I’m strictly bank (also I’m just so tired of trying to throw light plastics on a md BC into 15-30mph wind ALL THE TIME)…so I changed up and cut down. I now have a 7’ md H BC for spinners and swimbaits and such, a 7’ md BC for cranks, a 7’md h spinning for lighter plastics/Carolina, a 6’6” md h BC for heavier jigs/Carolina, a 6’6” m spinning for shaky/drop shot/ned. And then a frog rod. And I am so pleased. My son now has 4 spinning setups (spinners, cranks, plastics, lighter plastics and such) so he can switch (which he does nearly every cast) to his hearts delight. And I still have our 2 very light panfish rigs. And I’m happy. Took my crank, spinner, and trig setups with me today and and it was glorious not feeling like I left things behind I could have needed. Those 3 setups covered everything I was doing. And it feels good to have slimmed down my gear. And I caught a fish. I must be crazy. But I’m satisfied. ?♂️ 3 Quote

I have way too many combos but yet every time I take my dogs for a walk (daily) I justify every one and sometimes talk myself into upgrading (purchasing) one more rod/reel to complete the arsenal. This is why I couldn’t respond to the “if you could only have 1 combo” thread?. 3 Quote
huZZah Posted July 16, 2021 Author Posted July 16, 2021 My wife helps me keep it under control. I’m not a hoarder really of anything, but she definitely makes me think twice when I have to submit a proposal and budget review followed by a PO in triplicate, notorized, for any purchase over $20. Actually she just wants an explanation and she doesn’t understand why 1 rod/reel doesn’t cover it even for me. I do want to replace my frog rod with a heavier one, but that won’t be an option until this one breaks. So I might help it at some point… 1 Quote
Eric 26 Posted July 16, 2021 Posted July 16, 2021 LMAO ?. I’ve come to realize both myself and my wife are hoarders to an extent ( I still have a cabinet of 80-90’s era motorcycle & fishing ? magazines) even though I never got the bike?. I keep justifying my purchases to the BOSS ? by saying when I retire they will all be used. Good luck hooking into the “one” that breaks your frog rod?. 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted July 16, 2021 Super User Posted July 16, 2021 A lot of times I've gone down to 2-3 rods and focused on primarily one presentation in each situation I'm fishing in. Sometimes I'll skip the deep spot to target weedlines or target laydowns. Sometimes this makes sense, especially on larger lakes where I would often go out with 5 rods in back and one or two up front. Since I am in a kayak, it takes enough time to move spot to spot anyway. 1 Quote

My motorcycle/photography/fishing/hunting/gun magazines from 70s/80s got left behind when I moved to this area over 36 years ago. They finally got thrown away a couple years ago when my aunt died and the property got sold. I wish I still had a few of them. I told my wife the same things about my rods and reels. The problem is even if I do retire they won't all get used because I've managed to amass way too many over the past 12 years. I bet I will be lucky if 20 combos get used. OP, I have a hard time selecting just a few when I go fishing. I fish from shore and may load 8-10 combos in the car. Most of the time I don't use more than 2 or 3 of them. 1 Quote

Now all of them is 6 if I take the frog. Much more manageable. And if I decide to walk a ways I can lock a couple in the cab. Quote

Good golly, for bank beating I prefer 1 rod, 2 at the most, I hate having to babysit extra rods but it is nice having the extra options. When out the other day me and my buddy were joking about how we need to hire a caddy like golfers, “Caddy, hand me my medium heavy nrx and tie on a 1/2oz black jig and chartreuse craw”, lol one can dream… 1 4 Quote

I too am a bank angler and I also realized most can be covered with 3 rods. And I used to carry 5, lol. What I realized is that it is a PITA to carry 5 setups in the fingers of one hand and that on every trip no more than 3 were used and the 2 others hardly if ever were used. Glad I wished up and so did you. Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted July 16, 2021 Super User Posted July 16, 2021 If hoarding is a tendency for you, don't ever take up fly fishing and fly tying. I always point to my buddy Mick, who had over 100 graphite fly rods before he ever got the bug for split cane - glad there's someone I can point to - besides, Mick is secure in life and doesn't mind being picked on. The day he decided to take up fly tying, he spent $1500. At the river with his first box of flies, he mused over the fact that each fly cost him $106. This problem I don't have - I'm a hand-to-mouth fly tier - I don't tie for fun, only to put flies in a box when I'm going to need them tomorrow. But on any fly fishing forum, you find people who tie for fun and relaxation, (I hate the cutesey names they gives to fly patterns worse than the handles they give to lure colors these days). But using Mick again, he has a wall of filled fly boxes he will never open. The longer you do this, should find yourself fishing fewer and fewer patterns, better and better - I'm good with 6 in coldwater, 3 in warmwater, and 3 in the salt. BTW, I used to hoard Fly Tier magazine, along with catalogs, FR&R, Gray's Sporting Journal, etc. Wish I had the old catalogs, but found myself never opening the old magazines a second time. 1 Quote
