Hey all, so I’ve recently started wanting to use some hi viz line so I can watch and see my line better. My question is would a high viz line deter a fish from striking a TOPWATER lure? Sense the line floats I’m very curious. Even though you can see the topwater strikes, sometimes I lose sight of it if it’s choppy or windy.

What do y’all think?

My topwater setup is 50lb moss green with a 17lb mono leader just in case I get a toothy fish. I cut the leader off when I’m frogging and just use straight braid.

I know for underwater applications and techniques everyone has their own opinion. I personally use a fluro leader just for ease of mind.

In my personal opinion...no!

I use Berkley Big Game in Costal Brown, Mean Green, & Steel Blue under various conditions.

I personally don’t think the color of the line would make a difference on topwater or any depth of presentation.

As far as losing sight of you lure on top water, to me that’s a good thing. ? I cant tell you how many fish I lost because I saw the strike and set the hook too early.

One of the things I read many years ago, when I was learning to walk the dog, was to look away from my lure and focus on something else. When you hear the splash, wait for the weight. Meaning, wait until the fish takes your lure down, then set the hook.

Good luck

I don't think the hi vis line will deter fish from striking top water baits under most conditions, I DO think it may cause someone to miss fish by reacting too quickly. What I've settled on that works for me for top water hook sets, depending on the lure and conditions is to wait for the fish to come tight, or wait for the splash to end.

As long as you are using a leader, the color of your line won't matter.  When using live bait for offshore ocean fishing the water is extremely clear and there is no cover.  The fish can swim right up to the bait and inspect it close up.   I've seen all colors and strengths of line used successfully with fluorocarbon leaders.  In that style of fishing, there is a big difference between mono and fluro leaders.  If a sailfish can detect the line, so can a bass.

When bass fishing in Florida, I fish mostly with clear or natural green colored mono.  If the water is very clear, I may use fluorocarbon. I didn't always.  Some time ago it was proven to me that flouro gets more strikes under those conditions. The only time I use braid with no leader is when frog fishing in very heavy cover where I may have to dig a large bass out of the cover with 5 pounds of weeds hanging off it.

Definitely looks like I’ll give some hi viz braid a go. Was looking at the seaguar smack down lime green or yellow. Might even do a hi viz leader now as well. Thanks all for the replies.

For topwater, I'm not convinced that color of the lure matters!  Let alone color of the line!  Maybe in ultra clear water on a calm day.  But we don't have either of those here.
