Has anyone tried a Super Shad Rap.  I have had some luck this year with magnum square bills and saw one of these giant Shad Raps in a tackle shop, I was tempted to buy one, but thought I would try and get more information before spending $16 on one.

Yes ~

But it's a pretty BIG Bait -

Perhaps even by Mexican Bass standards.

For comparison, it's a Pike & Musky bait for me here.

Not as big as some glide baits I looked at for a fraction of the cost.  Do you do well on them with Musky?  Or do other large crankbaits work better?  The Tilapia I have seen lately in the mouths of bass are larger than the Super Shad Rap.   The bass have been hitting the largest square bills well, so I will probably pass on the Shad Rap.   Bait Monkey almost got me on an impulse buy again.

More pike than musky and I don't target either a ton.

My pb lm came on a perch ssr.  Lm can eat fish up to 40 percent of their length, so a 6" ssr can be eaten by 16 "er - no problem.  They may be too big for smallies though...

My PB pike and musky both came on a Super Shad Rap. Come to think of it, my personal best snapping turtle came on that bait too. Never caught a bass on one, but I don’t use it for bass fishing.

I have two of them.  They don't fit in any of my Planos or tackle box and I keep forgetting to put them in one of the compartments of the boat, so they've never been fished!   Yet...

Out of the 300+ Rapalas I have (so many that I had to count them) I have never had one of the Super Shad Raps. I never see them for sale around here, must be a more popular lure in pike and Muskie places. $16 though seems high dollar in the Rapala line. I’ll have to look them up and see what patterns they come in ?

I have one I bought for muskie. Only fish I've ever caught on it was a small largemouth though.

The Rapala freak and junkie I am I’ve not tried it yet. I’ve been kicking it around for seasons. I sort of max out with the 8 & 9 Shad Raps. I’ve been throwing them for awhile now. They have yielded me some bigger fish. But 5’s, 6 and 7’s have been productive for years. The Shad Rap is probably my favorite bait of all time.

I’ve been kicking it as a big swimbait or wake bait type but have not bit yet to buy it. Don’t feel it about the bait.

Great post! Good luck with it.

The only other giant bait I have is a huge jerk bait.  I found it on clearance at a saltwater shop when I was at the coast and I thought it might make a good pike lure so I grabbed it.

I caught a 9" largemouth with it on the first cast.  That was what inspired me to buy the Super Shad Raps... that, and success with some oversize crankbaits.

I'll be trying mine out soon, if this rain ever stops...

Theyre really good at imitating bunker in the fall and shad in the spring.  I don't use them for LMB, I throw them for stripers and they have much smaller mouths in comparison.  The big drawback with them is the casting distance, especially in wind.

I'm gonna throw the SSR this evening and see how small a bass I can get to hit it. I'm thinking 1 1/2- 2lbs or so, and if a big one hits it I won't get mad...

They're $16 now?  I paid that for 2  (many years ago). I had to replace the trebles from stock, i hope they come with better hooks these days..

I’ve got three of them and that is what I use them for - musky fishing. Primarily a trolling lure.

So threw it last evening, and got 2 on it, one maybe a tad over a lb, and one just over 2 lbs. Only brought it and one other rod with a WP, and caught 3 more on that, 2, 3, and 5 lbs in about 2 hours. So much for big bait, big fish... :)

Earlier this year I think Matt Robertson mentioned the Super Shad Raps for pre spawn. He did not go into any details.
