So I have a Dobyns Sierra flippin stick. It’s ok but I just find I don’t use it. I have an expride 7’6 heavy that I use that for. I do need a high end bottom contact rod. So I’m thinking of either going through Dobyns trade in program and getting an xtasy, or just selling the Sierra and getting an nrx. What would you do? I haven’t used either (xstasy or nrx) and I do t have any stores within 100 miles that have them in stock. I am guessing I will get more money towards the Sierra by trading it in, but if everyone thinks that the nrx is that much better then maybe I should just go ahead and sell it. I’m going to be using it mainly for dragging football jig and Texas rig on the bottom and want the most sensitive rod.  Thanks for your thoughts

I haven't fished an Xtasy, but it's probably a very nice rod. And Dobyns warranty and customer service is top notch, which is something to consider.

I also don't have a NRX, but I have the Daiwa Steez 7'5" MH-H/F Bottom Contact rod and that might be something to consider. I can feel every rock or weed my jig hits and every vibration in the rod. You can definitely throw a 3/4oz jig with it as well, and it casts 3/8 well.

My oldest son just got the Doybns Champion XP 744C, and that rod is very similar, maybe a touch lighter. One of the biggest differences is that it may have a softer tip, but less of a tip.

I would skip the Xtasy its not that great of a rod for bottom contact, despite how the company markets it.

As for the NRX they are not the end all for ultimate sensitivity, lightness, balance, build quality etc, but they are plenty sensitive, they do get a lot of hype and for good reason, in the past when they were first introduced there was nothing really like them sensitivity wise in the US market aside from the Phenix K2, today that has changed drastically but they still benefit from past accomplishments.

My opinion is to just buy a NRX, because even if you select a superior rod you will always wonder if a NRX is better.

But if you are looking at the NRX line, consider the Conquests also, overall just a much better rod.

Another option would be the brand new 2021 Steez AGS line, they are beautiful rods and edge out the NRX in every category, one of my most sensitive non JDM rods I have.

And don't forget the Phenix K2 series the K2 Torzite Casting 765H is a great bottom contact rod on par with the sensitivity of a NRX and a great warranty.

Well that wasn’t helpful at all lol. Way to muddy up the water ha. Jk of course.  So which of all of those would be your pick for what I’m looking to use it for?  Any other thoughts?

So what is the end all be all of lightness and sensitivity in the US domestic market?

What type of football jigs and Texas rigs? Finesse football jigs like keitechs with double tail grubs, or heavy wire football jigs with bulky heavy trailers like a flapping hog II?

what jig weights? Minus the trailer?

Depends on the technique, for sparse cover to open water Bottom Contact I would say it's these, from what I have and actually use in this order.

#1Daiwa Bottom Contact II

#2Phenix K2 765H

#3Megabass P5 X Bites

#4LEGEND XTREME AGS 7FT1MH XFAST

Honorable mention: NRX+ 873CRR which you can't go wrong with, it's just not what it could have been.

Most of the rods I listed are on backorder, but well worth the wait.

I have a GLX 894 currently for my jigs and that does pretty good for everything I need. I also have one conquests rod a 844 and that’s really nice also. I had a 843 but it snapped into three pieces on a hook set on a dink with light line, currently waiting to get a warranty replacement on that but knowing my luck the season will be over before I get it back no clue. I find myself using my two poison adrena rods the most though, they are probably some of my favorite rods for value.

If you rely on acrid to detect strikes no amount of money will help you other then your ego.

Buy a rod for it’s customer service, balance, weight, casting performance, workmanship, guide train, handle/reel seat design that fits your needs. Custom rods with state of the art blanks and components made to your exact specifications.

Thanks for your reply!  I'll take a look at all of those.  I fish several lakes with quite a variety so I do fish the smaller keitechs, but also sometimes the bigger presentations.  But the majority would be 1/2 ounce finesse fb with a super chunk or rage craw.  Thanks again

I don't think the term "acrid" means what you think it means.  ?

It means “a rod”  by hitting the c in lieu of the space bar and i instead of o. Should type without wearing my readers ?

It looks like you are going from the sort of lower level of the rod spectrum to the high end.  I am not saying that the Sierra is a bad rod, just pointing out its price point.  I have a couple of NRX rods and they are amazing but once you go that far, it's hard to turn back.

I would also hold on to the Sierra.  It's about $100 rod when they are on sale, which means trade in is about $50 on the high end.  I would find a rod to complement it and if you are looking at the NRX, I would also look at the GLX and the Megabass Destroyer P5 line up.  Finally, look for one that is going to suit your needs.  If it's a do all rod, the MBR 843C GLX or NRX from Loomis and the Megabass Super Destroyer (if you can find it).

Appreciate the advice…but most of my rods are medium (avid x and exprides) to  higher end (megabass). A really good bottom contact rod is the only niche that I really don’t have a good rod for.  Thanks again for the tips and help.

Sorry I made the assumption that you had just the one rod or just a few.

So I have the 873CCR, 802C, and 853C NRX and depending on what you fish all three of these work great as a bottom contact rod.  With that said, I wouldn't do the Super Destroyer I mentioned above.   All though it's fantastic,  it's not the best bottom contact rod for jigs.  It is great at Texas rigged soft plastic though and can be used for just about anything.   In the Megabass line, the X-bites would be the ticket.   I have not fished it, only held it in hand.  It does feel amazing.   I would have purchased it instead of the SD but it would had the same purpose as the 873CCR and I wanted a rod that could throw small swimbaits like the 6in Magdraft and Dark Sleepers.
