walleyecrazy Posted July 8, 2021 Posted July 8, 2021 Get her one of these rod holders so she can just pop the rod in there rather than laying it in the rocks each time she needs to use both hands for something. I use one of these when fishing on the beach to keep myself from laying the rod in the sand, or accidentally dropping it while trying to hold it under my arm. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08ZJC58X3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 2 Quote
schplurg Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 That's only 3 months worth of damage? Honesty is important. So is money. Pick one, cause it's gonna cost you one way or the other. I agree with the rod holder idea, that's what I was going to say too. I may use one because I don't wanna lay my more expensive rods on the ground. Edit: My girlfriend would be buying her own gear at that rate of damage. That is extreme! 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted July 9, 2021 Super User Posted July 9, 2021 It is best to take care of your fishing gear so you do not lose any fish due to the reel being damaged. I have reels that are over a decade old and they are in better condition than the spinning reel shown in this thread. These reels have caught very large saltwater fish so do not think a reel needs to be roughed up to show it has caught fish. In the end a reel's condition is the responsibility of the owner. If that person does not mind buying reel after reel then they can abuse the reel as much as they want. 1 Quote
ThatZX14Fella Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 It's a reel, and a reel is a tool. Do you avoid hitting things with your hammer because you're scared your hammer will look bad? 1 2 Quote

Your wife’s reel looks like it is being dropped on the rocks, not set down. But as long as it’s working I wouldn’t worry about it. here is the spot that does all the damage 10 hours ago, RenzokukenFisher said: How is the pflueger president? I've been looking to get a nice ultralight setup for panfishing and was looking at the president. Would it be a solid reel you think? I will let you know at the end of the season? 1 Quote

Most folks take of the things, some don’t. Tom all my reels have spiderwire 20 and 30 lb and the darn spider wire always looks frayed even after one outing with new line. As soon as the green dye wears off after a few casts it looks frayed with micro frays, little hairs standing up. I have been using spider since around 1992 and never had a problem with it even as it looks worn out. The line on her reel is 20lb. Quote

My wife matches her outfit and most times it looks like we are going out to dinner instead of fishing. . 2 Quote
Bassin' Brad Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 I agree a person needs to take care of stuff, but I personally think making her pay for her own stuff or lecturing her on being rough on the reel is a bit much. A nice dinner at a restaurant for two can cost $40 - $100 and that's just for one evening. That reel cost a similar amount but yall have enjoyed three months worth of time together fishing. Sounds cheap to me. 4 Quote
FishinBuck07 Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 As said above they are tools, yes I try to take care of my stuff but don't worry about cosmetics. If it ain't broke, you know the rest! I would kill for the rods and reels my wife has to look like that, means she was out more often fishing with me. Quote

ThrowinPlugs Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 Man id hate to see your reaction to how we treat our surfcasting rods and $800 van staals over here on the east coast lmao Shes getting her use out of it for sure! 2 Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 That reel looks like its spent a few seasons hard seasons in an aluminum boat. I would guess shes setting the reel down to handle fish and it taken a few tumbles. No reels stays pristine for ever and I somewhat understand where people are coming from when they say they buy reels to fish with them not baby them. Rash is 1 thing, but the gouges in the spool lip will certainly damage line. I taught my neices and nephews to treat the reel like they would they're phone no matter the cost or condition of the reel. If they don't like it they get to use the spongebob rod. Id get a spongebob outfit until she learns to care for her gear. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted July 10, 2021 Super User Posted July 10, 2021 Guess I'm frugal. I like to keep my stuff looking as nice as possible because it is going to be with me a long time. Saying reels are tools and how you handle them doesn't matter makes me cringe. Sorry, but it also makes it seem you can't be bothered to take the time to care for your tools. I learned to replace the reel cover every time I picked up a different rod after getting a bad spot of boat rash on a mint Chronarch 101A. It's not like I could buy another one. Sure it cuts down on my number of casts, but my reels stay nice. I don't mind the possibility of missing the occasional fish because of protecting my reels. There are dings on the head of my hammer, but the handle doesn't look like a piece of chit (sheet?). That's a rough place to be setting down rods. I gather your wife is excitable. Seems the rod could be set down with a bit more care. Better yet to learn how to hold it under her arm while removing fish and baiting the hook. BUT I am a bit envious of the OP. My wife never liked to fish. I guess I could have learned to put up with buying her a new reel (maybe) every year had she liked to spend time fishing with me. She wouldn't have been using my rods, tho. 3 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted July 10, 2021 Super User Posted July 10, 2021 I think from the OP's post, that he's got his priorities straight. The wife is more valuable than the reel. Any reel. jj 3 Quote

Instead of jewelry for X-mas i will just buy her a new reel which will be alot cheaper?. When i did clean her reel i also removed long strands of hair that were wound onto the spool shaft, heres why Quote

On the upside she is 70 now and just starting to get a few gray hairs. Her hair is the same color as your wife's. It is a blessing that your wife likes to spend time fishing with you. Enjoy it while you can. 1 Quote
