Jake51823 Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 Hey all, right now I’m running three setups because that’s all I have at the moment (left all my other rods in a different state, long story). Here’s what I have: 6’6 MHF Baitcaster: This is my topwater rod. I use this for EVERYTHING TOPWATER including frogs. Right now I have #40 Power Pro on there and I do like it. I’ve also used Sunline Defier Armilo Nylon and I loved that stuff as well. For the use of everything topwater would mono or braid be best and what # for an overall purpose topwater line? 7’0 MHF Baitcaster: This is my rod for all types of jigs, spinner bait, chatter bait, some swim baits rod. I currently have suffix 832 in #40 on this and it’s not my favorite but it’s not the worst either. What type of line would be best for those types of applications and # test? 7’0 MF Spinning: This is my rod for t rigs, soft plastics, finesse like ned rig and wacky rig. I currently have #10 suffix advance mono on it right now and again it’s not the best but not the worst. What type of line would be best for the applications and # test? I’m not big on tying on leaders at all and I always use straight line and direct tie. So please no leader recommendations. Thank you for everyone’s response. Quote
Blaine Donders Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 50# braid 12-15 pound fluoro 8-10# mono. You said no leader, but man, 15-20# braid with an 8-10# fluoro leader smokes on a spinning rig. 1 Quote

moguy1973 Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 I like the Power Pro SuperSlick8 on my spinning rods. It's really soft and manageable for spinning reels. I don't use leaders though so no suggestions on that. 1 Quote

I really like 20# Power Pro yellow, 20# 832 Lime, and #14 Fireline chartreuse. I haven’t noticed much difference with fluoro when just using as a leader. I use remnants I keep around. Usually Seaguar InvisX or Red Label. Usually 10#, as that’s what I spool my light duty baitcasters with. Quote
Bass Rutten Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 I'd stick with braid on your topwater rod only because of the frog. For the 7'mh a quality 15lb fluoro like abrazx is great for bottom contact, I also love a good copoly like p-line cxx, it's a little more versatile by allowing topwaters too. For spinning I'd go 6 or 8lb fluoro if you're dead set against leaders, but when a friend convinced me to try braid w/leader a decade and a half ago it was a game changer for me. The alberto knot is dead simple, people make to big a deal about leaders being troublsome imo. I use 10lb powerpro to 8lb fluoro. 1 Quote

I definitely am thinking going straight fluoro on my 7 mh, just looking for the best tool for the job. Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted July 8, 2021 Super User Posted July 8, 2021 I like 30 lb PowerPro for my medium duty BC combos, 50 lb for frogs. I like 20 lb PP for my spinning combos. I'm still using 15 lb Big Game for my spinner/buzzbaits combo. Quote
Cgrinder Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 Braid for topwater and frogs; Power Pro is fine, but FX2 is rounder and prettier. Walking baits really want a mono leader but it is what it is. Fluoro (Sniper or Assassin) for everything else. Whatever you do, buy decent fluoro (treat yoself). If you're fishing significant grass or other veg, braid for everything. Quote
