Lucky 13 Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 If you are a Heddon fan, you’ve probably heard of Mill Pond in Dowagiac, Michigan. That’s where Jim started it all. Sadly, the Mill Pond is facing the dreaded Millfoil invasion. If we get on it now, we can save the pond. The biggest problem is funding the project. If interested, please respond. I’m sure tax deductions, et al would apply. Our association is a non-profit. Quote
David 7 Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 Milfoil has invaded a nearby lake near me, Round Lake in upstate NY. DEC has workers posted there during the day checking peoples boats, but the damage has been done. Virtually the entire shoreline is covered in milfoil, all the way to the top of the water. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted July 7, 2021 Global Moderator Posted July 7, 2021 There are companies around here that will kill it for hire, maybe there’s some in your area. They are very legit with all their govt permits because bass fishermen have been trying to shut them down forever Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted July 7, 2021 Super User Posted July 7, 2021 There is no doubt that Guntersville is what it is today because of milfoil. It was a mediocre bass fishery before the milfoil invasion. Same can be said for Kentucky Lake. It was mediocre, then milfoil was everywhere and it became world class. Now the grass is gone and it's mediocre again. Some blame asian carp and I'm sure they haven't helped but I blame the disappearance of the milfoil. 1 Quote

Now they say the big G has too much grass, I say hogwash! I love fishing milfoil 2 Quote

Is mildoil a bad thing, I don't know much about biology but I thought grass creates oxygen and oxygen is good for bass which raises ph level Yada Yada. Maybe I'm wrong but all my lakes have it and one that has it produced the world record bass (Dixon lake) 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted July 7, 2021 Global Moderator Posted July 7, 2021 Love the stuff!! Other than a blowup on a frog, there’s Nothing in the world of Bass fishing better than punching a 1-2oz weight through thick pads of hyacinth and hydrilla, with swimming a worm or pitching in and through areas of milfoil right behind Mike 1 Quote
Happybeerbuzz Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 The Lucky 13 and Baby Lucky 13 were two of my dad's favorite lures. So much so, I buried him with one when he passed. I still throw them occasionally, and they still catch fish. 1 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted July 7, 2021 Super User Posted July 7, 2021 While Eurasian milfoil may improve fishing in some places it can be a big problem in other places. The Dowagiac millpond is about 120 acres, with 14 feet max depth. The situation is not really comparable to big, deep reservoirs like Guntersville. Eurasian milfoil grows fast and early, and spreads like wildfire. It can take over a small area entirely, displacing native plants, blocking sunlight, choking out other subsurface plant growth, disrupting the local food chains that depend on native plant species (including native Northern Milfoil), and reducing dissolved oxygen levels (even as it produces oxygen) on balance. In small shallow waters, it can become so dense as to eliminate practical water access for boating or fishing at all. Quote

Super User WRB Posted July 8, 2021 Super User Posted July 8, 2021 The boy or girl who released the pet gold fish dumped plants that are usually milfoil, the aggressive non native version. A small lake milfoil can be harvested by weed cutting boats to reduce surface plants down to 3’.. Tom Quote
