Recently had a mishap with a megabass Destroyer and warranty issues are making me want to stop doing business with them entirely. Wondering for a replacement who'd be the better replacement. A rod from St-croix or Gloomis? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts!

I doubt you could go wrong with either. A price would help people make a suggestion. Are we talking NRX and Legend Extreme or E6X and Avid X?

Definitely prefer to go the higher end route, nrx and legend extreme.

G. Loomis 822DSR in either a GLX or NRX has been a go to for many anglers.  You find tons of reviews out there on both.

Thats definitely a high contender on my list, I've heard alot of bad regarding the recoil guides though. Have you have any experience?

In the NRX I have the 803S, 853C, 802C and the 873CCR and I like the recoil guides.  I have not had an issue yet.  I also had the old 803C GLX with recoil guides but I broke it and had it replaced under Loomis's Xpeditor Service.  The new rod does not have the recoil guides and it, unfortunately, is not the same rod.  I kind of preferred the recoil guides.

The only issue I can see with the recoil guides is if you try to pull a heavy snag or some heavy cabbage with braid and it cuts the guides but I have never seen this by anyone that has them.

Really eh? I'm glad you've had experience with them before so I feel I can take your opinion more to heart. As far as cutting the guides thats the one big red flag I had. But sounds to me like it could be a very small percentage of people that may have had this happen. Big picture sounds like i shouldn't worry to much. But you found they helped in a way? What did you find made it a better rod with the REC guides?

It also helps that I only plan on throwing straight fluro on this combo!

I think the recoil guides add a little bit of sensitivity but the biggest thing they are supposed to bring is a reduction in weight.

The GLX 803C I had was just as perfect as it could get and the new rod they sent me sort of seemed like a down grade but still a great rod.  It was at the time my favorite rod and it was just not the same.

This is awesome thank you! Definitely made me more confident in the recoil guides. Most things I read prior were all second hand accounts or things guys heard so its nice to see someone have positive feedback towards them.

i have 2 legend tournament drop shot rods the 6 foot 10 inch ones. i fish them a ton and like them alot. im sure a glx or nrx would be even a little better. i personaly would go glx because i dont like the nrx guides but thats me.the legend extreme drop shot rod is great too but im not paying over 300 for a rod. just have too many and dont feel like the return for the money is that great.

Totally love my loomis DSR, but my alpha angler is not far behind.

I have moved off my previous position that I need the softest tip as I am starting to throw heavier weights in heavier vegetation

I've never heard if alpha angler but I just checked out the DSR by them and that is a pretty sweet rod!

I have a few and love them all...they also go on sale a few times a year.

I also have their finesse BC for my bubba shot

For this year, I picked up a Daiwa Tatula Elite 7'1" M/F Brent Ehrler model dropshot rod. I typically use it for larger soft plastics or heavier weights (or both) and it's also good for things like shaky heads and tubes, but I'm very impressed with the sensitivity of the rod.

It's not a St. Croix or a G. Loomis, but it's definitely worth considering.

ALX Enox Charmer, 6’11” MLF Drop Shot spinning rod, 1/16-1/2oz state of the art blank, reel seat, guides and premium cork handle, $320

Tom

PS, not impressed with SC rods. Both Dobyns and ALX have excellent customer service.

What warranty issues were you having if you don't mind me asking?

Just snapped my favorite megabass rod and submitted a warranty request and i'll be pretty sour if they make me pay money for a new rod.

I know their warranty doesn't cover a lot of things, although snapping a rod is likely covered and takes like a year.

So I just picked up a nrx 822s dsr! Thank for everyone's help :) but as for waranty my rods cracked and my local shop said with past claims they've made they had no success unless the rod was snapped. I'm screwed till mine fully breaks but as for you, you should be okay! I'm not sure about paying a fee though.

If it was me, I’d take it down a notch on the expensive scale. You see so many people with “warranty issues” on “high end” rods. Just go down one level and you should be good to go.

I use Conquest 842S(spinning) for deopshot, Mt reel is Excence 3000 and back with Samurai 15lb and at least 10 yards of 4-6lb test Berkley vanish for leader. I must say that is a one hell of combination and you cant go wrong with that, Also I am agree with most of the guys, NRX can do the job very well as well.

Any Dobyns 2 power. Let your budget decide the series and model.

This is not bad advice.  I have a 2 power Kaden.  It’s so light. Its NOT my drop shot rod.  My DS rod is a 7’3” Phenix MED rod and it’s Sick!  So sensitive which is what I wanted in that style of fishing.  I feel the lightest ticks. Even with partially slack line.

my Kaden handles Neds, light shake heads and my ubiquitous wanky worm. The action is more med to me and the added bend is fun when setting the hook with a wacky.   It’s a more fun fish fight with the Kaden.  Less drama.

(don’t forget about Phenix rods).

Dobyns has Lifetime Warranty, one of the best.

The 2 Power Xtasy would be a sweet stick for DS. I have a 3 Power Casting Model and it's surprisingly good for DS as well. I prefer the G.Loomis Conquest a tad bit more, but I have no experience with their Spinning Rods. Phenix are some nice light rods also with nice tips that I would think would be good for DS.
