Whatever Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 I am attempting to learn jig fishing, and encountering problems. When using a swim jig, and attempting to change skirts, the Dirty Jigs skirts I am using have a metal collar that will not remotely slide onto the hook on the jig head. What am I missing here? (This has probably been answered before, but I cannot find it. And Useless Tube, as usual, is no help). Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted July 4, 2021 Super User Posted July 4, 2021 Sounds to me like what you bought are punch skirts. These are designed to slide on your line after you slide on a weight then you tie on a hook after the skirt. The idea is you Texas rig a plastic to make it weedless and the skirt adds bulk to the presentation. It is designed to be fished in heavy vegetation. 2 Quote
Whatever Posted July 4, 2021 Author Posted July 4, 2021 With your info in mind, I actually read the package (Duh!), Yes, it says Punching Skirt! Thank you , Ditch, for illuminating that issue. Now I need some swim jig heads that accommodate regular skirts, and the appropriate skirts. I have been using the ones with the stiff bristle "weed guard", and they work very well in the local milfoil. Thank you, Sir! Quote

I feel like I'm about to ask a stupid question, but why are you trying to buy skirts and jigheads separately instead of just buying a jig that already has a skirt? I know that making one's own custom jigs is a thing, but it seems unnecessarily...fiddly when one is trying to learn how to fish a jig, as you say you are. 1 Quote

It seems easier to take a half dozen jig heads, in several sizes, and two dozen interchangeable skirts, versus buying 2 dozen jig heads, in various weights. I am given to understand that the color of the skirts can make a big difference in success. Skirts are fairly cheap, compared to buying several dozen completed jigs. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 4, 2021 Super User Posted July 4, 2021 Well, if you are fishing in the right places, you need replacement jigs. One and done is "standard operating procedure", but I have gone four for four on occasion, too. In a boat you can generally recover 75% or so fishing rocks, but only 50% or less around wood. The percentages on the Tennessee River are considerably lower. 1 Quote

The advantage to using a skirt on a punch rig is twofold; It adds bulk and action to your presentation and it slows the fall rate which can make the difference in getting bit when fishing weeds in deeper water. 2 Quote
