Super User Koz Posted July 4, 2021 Super User Posted July 4, 2021 I have a great BPS 1972 ballcap that I like to wear when out fishing but it's a tan color and when I wear it with my hotel logo shirt that's the same color I look like a zookeeper, so when shopping today I was looking far a darker color fishing cap. Just about every cap out there is a mesh trucker style cap. Did I time warp back to the 1970's? (And before someone chimes in about sun protection and wide brimmed hats I have those as well but I prefer a ballcap and a gaiter. I also wear the ball cap when we do our Fishing with the GM at the hotel.) Quote
Bassin' Brad Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 I'm 25 and as a young teenager I loathed the net back hats, but several years ago I noticed they were putting mesh back on some really nice hats and I fought it for awhile but eventually it hooked me too and now that's mostly all I wear. Quote
Captain Phil Posted July 4, 2021 Posted July 4, 2021 I'm top of head hair challenged. I wasn't always that way. Back in the seventies, I had my hair cut by a "stylist". Today, I get the #1 cut at a barber shop. Ball caps have always been the standard bass fishing head covering. I have a closet full of them. A few from tournaments that are over 40 years old. It's hot in Florida, so I preferred mesh hats as they are cooler. About ten years ago, I went to my wife's dermatologist. She's light skinned and I'm definitely not. What looked like a small spot on my head about the size of a pencil eraser turned out to be skin cancer. It wasn't melanoma, but it needed to be removed. I ended up with a cut on my head about 3 inches wide. My son is an avid fisherman as well. He's had his ears reconstructed twice. For all those reasons, I wear a large floppy hat. It's looks stupid, but given the alternative I'm OK with it. 4 Quote

I had skin cancer, and now I really don't give a rat's patootie whether it looks stupid to other people or not. I cover up. Have a good one. jj 1 Quote

Dont forget your in rural Georgia… I have a Dark green BPS hat from the eighties that’s a little too small but I’ll wear it occasionally to relive the old times… 1 Quote

Super User Way2slow Posted July 7, 2021 Super User Posted July 7, 2021 After five scars 2 1/2 - 3" long from having skin cancers cut out, style means nothing. I want the widest brim hat with the neck cover flap on the back I can get. Very much like Captain Phil has on. Found some real nice one a couple of years ago with the neck cover flap and bought a 1/2 dozen, because they are not always easy to find like that. Quote
CrankFate Posted July 7, 2021 Posted July 7, 2021 I always wear a hat. When I was younger, I had a really really short haircut. Spent a few days working outside 12 hours a day in the summer and got sunburn on top of my head. It was dark brown, burnt and peeling. All of my hair never grew back and I got a permanent mole the size of a dime on my temple. I have worn a hat whenever I’m in the sun ever since. I still have good amount of hair, and no man on any side of my family ever went bald, but the area where the worst burn was is thinner and is never coming back. Quote

That’s why I don’t understand wearing a mesh hat. I prefer full coverage, and better yet a hat with a decent UPF rating. Quote

I don’t know? I only started wearing the mesh back hats this season. No problems, though. I think with my hair all pressed down it’s ok. I wouldn’t wear it with a very short haircut. Quote

They were 66% off from Pflueger so heck ya I bought some. I don't care much what people think of my appearance. Never have been. Having skin cancer because you didn't wear a hat looks "stupid". Wearing a Gilligan hat to protect yourself looks pretty doggone intelligent to me. And I swear I'm getting very slight burns through my ballcap. I just bought UV shirts that are slightly small and make me look fat - well I look as fat as I actually am now. UV gloves I have yet to try. Besides you'll always look cooler than a golfer. I mean yikes! 2 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 Speaking of the 70s. You think my hat looks stupid, you should have seen me in my green jumpsuit! ? 1 Quote
