I am using a Daiwa Revros LT 2500 Spinning Reel and recently bought 15lb braid for it. I've heard braid slips on a spinning reel and to tie on a monofilament base so the braid would not slip. I tied the mono to the braid with a Uni knot (or double uni knot). However, now the knot is in my reel, and at least once per trip it seems a far cast will get yanked back as my line coming out gets stuck on the knot. I then have to pull off all my line to the knot and sort of bury it and make sure there's no slack at all around it or else my casts after that get yanked backwards as the line gets stuck. Is there anyway to fix this, is my uni knot just bulky/bad, do I really need the mono base on my spool? Or should I just switch to mono/fluoro completely as tying a mono base into braid into a fluoro leader seems counterintuitive.

How much braid do you have on top of the mono?

I go for 70yds minimum so that I don't get that close to the knot. 10# on my President 25 and 20# on my Avocet RZT-3000 and I've yet to have the 'yank back' from the knot...and yes, I use a double-uni to join the braid to the mono backing.

I might've put on too much of a mono base as I only had room for ~50 yds of braid on top but I'm pretty bad at guessing how much is on there.

I suck. I get my shop to spool up. All braid, no backing. They have this way they go round and round a bunch of times and the tie a half hitch and suck it under the stuff they  already have on, then go round and round again, another half hitch a few more rounds and then a Uni knot. It looks much easier with the spool removed and clamped in the spooling machine. I don’t think I could do it. Hell I tried and failed. My shop took my line off, retied  it and put my line right back on. TIGHT.

I can however, handle my own baitcasters. :)

Best thing to do is get a line-counter and using the stats of your reel, plug the numbers into here.

Advanced fishing reel line capacity estimator - Pattaya Fishing

This will give you near exact measurements - I use it for all my line since I mono-back even my FC and Hybrid lines, and it's been close enough to not matter (1/2-2/3yd difference) on all my reels.

Cast all the line off you can in the lake (or yard). Get to the knot, hand wrap the line back on so that the knot lays tight against the back of the spool. Then wind line back on. This should eliminate the problem unless you cast the knot out.

Better fix... Remove about 60 to 80 feet of backing, re-spool NEW braid back on to fill your reel.

I only put enough mono to make either one or maaaaybe two layers, it's only job is to grip.

you shouldn't ever see the backing knot, especially since you are using only 15# braid, meaning you should have a high spool capacity (yards) due to the low diameter.

If you use larger diameter mono, the knot will get big and snag thin braid even you still have about 10-15yds in spool. The easiest way right now is to use any tape on top to hide the knot.  Once the line get too low that you can cast all the way to tape then replace the braid and don’t forget to trim back those mono accordingly. Electrical tape work but I use plumbing tape in case I need to let the line out pass thru the tape.

Yup. You want enough braid for  2x the longest cast you can make with the heaviest lure you'll be using (downwind).

I have a Revros LT2500 with mono backing and 20 lb Sufix 832. I only put on enough mono to just cover the spool once. I never get to the uni knot.

As recommended put some tape on the knot.  I use blue painters tape.

Just cut it and use an fg knot with some opposing half hitchs to smooth out the back side of the knot making it smooth on both ends.  It's a very small diameter knot and very strong.  Stronger than a uni.

Also at least all the newer reels I have are made for braid.  No need for mono backing at all.  At most throw a thin piece of tape on it for friction and just go straight braid.

IMO backing should never make it off the spool in a cast.

It sounds to me like you either used far too much mono backing, or used line that is way too thick for the reel which has the same effect.

Make sure you have enough braid so you can never cast down to the mono backing.

I agree with the guys who said to pull off the braid until the connection knot is fully exposed and cover it with a piece of tape.  It is the easiest solution without starting over.

Like others have said, the backing should never make it through the quides , unless you are being spooled.
