transpose Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 I just bought a couple of travel spinning rods recently and have some questions. The first was a Shimano Clarus medium-light fast two-piece rod. It felt fine, though a little "muzzle heavy." (My wife will use the Clarus.) The second was the real problem - an Ardito-TR three-piece medium fast rod. Had I felt in it the store I might have guessed "heavy fast." It was too stiff, and it was really muzzle heavy. I'm returning the Ardito and looking for another travel bass rod. Is the St. Croix venture medium fast stiffer than true medium or do I need to move to medium-light, or medium-heavy? How does it balance? Is there something else I should be looking at in that price ($80 - $110) range? There's no great hurry - my light four-piece trout rod will handle all the bass I'm likely to catch from the lake shores I fish. Quote
QED Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 I like the Daiwa Presso 604ULFS-TR (4-piece and comes with case) for a UL pack rod. Quote
Super User islandbass Posted July 3, 2021 Super User Posted July 3, 2021 If you ask me, I think you’re set. curious. What do you mean by muzzle heavy? Never heard the term but it sounds cool. Our state just lifted the mandatory mask wearing band which is surprising but good. If anything, I call that muzzle heavy, perspiring underneath it and it being so itchy, lol. Quote
PaulVE64 Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Many people say the StC spinning rods are tip heavy. But the new victory rods dont have this design flaw. Quote

With firearms, some people like the muzzle (end of the firearm) to be heavy to steady their shots. I prefer a more rearward balance. 34 minutes ago, PaulVE64 said: But the new victory rods dont have this design flaw. Maybe I should try one. Any other choices? 1 hour ago, islandbass said: If you ask me, I think you’re set. I'll test cast a little and see if the feel improves. Maybe I'll wrap lead wire around the butt to bring the balance backwards. 1 Quote
Super User islandbass Posted July 3, 2021 Super User Posted July 3, 2021 Ahh, I see. Thanks. I too don’t like it if a rod is too tip heavy generally speaking. I have observed the rods seem to increase in “tip heaviness” the longer and more powerful it gets. It is more pronounced and felt in lower end and mid-range rods 7’+. And unfortunately for me, I’m not willing to spend the cash for the price of NRX level rods. Nothing personally against them, they’ve felt nice in hand. But it isn’t like a magic wand that would suddenly make a pro angler from the bank, lol. Quote
transpose Posted July 3, 2021 Author Posted July 3, 2021 I still don't like the Ardito, so I'm returning it. I'm ordering a St. Croix "Medium-Light" because I've read they run a little stiff. True? Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 3, 2021 Posted July 3, 2021 Repeat, they aren't stiff. The new ones are much more accurate when it comes to power rating. Quote
