Super User N Florida Mike Posted June 28, 2021 Super User Posted June 28, 2021 I got hurt at work crawling under a house 2 1/2 years ago. It took about a month to get better that time. I posted about it on BR then. Now Ive done it again. Its in my right upper chest , down deep. The pain starts there and goes on down the underside of my arm to my forearm. Its a pulled muscle, tear , or pinched nerve. I havent fished but a little for 3 weeks. Casting doesn’t bother me , but setting the hook is pretty bad. I know you’ll say go to the doctor, but it’s just too expensive. It seems to be slowly getting better. Hope Im better by the 4th, since Im planning a early morning trip. Ive been trying to gently stretch it, but Im not sure if it’s helping…its probably all the years of baseball and softball. Ive probably thrown 1/2 millon balls in my life…well maybe at least 100,000 , and more casts while fishing than that… 1 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 28, 2021 Global Moderator Posted June 28, 2021 I know the feeling. I hope you’re right! Without going to see the doc the best thing is to do nothing..I mean nothing. No lifting, bending or twisting and use a lot of topical heat. I hope you feel better soon. Mike 1 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 1, 2021 Super User Posted July 1, 2021 Ah man, that stinks! Hope the pain subsides enough for you to get out and fish the 4th! Get well @N Florida Mike! 1 Quote
Nelson Wormefeller Posted July 1, 2021 Posted July 1, 2021 I somehow injured my shoulder 3 years ago, and thought rest would make it better but over the following year I slowly lost movement range until I couldn't even touch my face. I finally went to doctor, he sent me to physical therapy. The physical therapy was really painful, it felt like the therapist was going to break my arm off. When it was done I was back to 100% movement and been so for over a year now. Just my advice from personal experience... waiting for it to get better by itself did not work, in fact made it worse. 1 1 Quote
throttleplate Posted July 2, 2021 Posted July 2, 2021 you need to move your tissue, muscles, tendons to get the blood flowing to promote healing, depending on the severity as surgery may be the only fix. Years ago if you hurt, strained your back the remedy was lay in bed but that was a mistake as after 24 hrs of rest you need to get to stretching the back. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted July 2, 2021 Super User Posted July 2, 2021 How did you get injured again? If at work, did you report the injury to your supervisor immediately to get Work Comp benefits? If you are self-employed, do you have Workers' Compensation insurance? What you penned sounds like you may have injured your rib cage, which is very painful. See your doctor and then follow doctor's advice. Make sure in the future you are covered by Workers Compensation insurance which is better than health insurance plans. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 2, 2021 Author Super User Posted July 2, 2021 Thanks for the kind words everyone. Sam, I injured it crawling under a house for work 2-3 years ago. The constant motion under there is like a soldier wiggling under barb wire. I dont remember it happening , but the next day I felt like someone was stabbing me in the upper right chest . Then I went to the workers comp doc. All he did was take an x ray and said he didnt see anything. Then gave me pain pills, muscle relaxers and heat creme. I took them off and on and after a month it finally seemed to be healed. This time Im not positive what set it off, but Im sure it wasnt at work. I had a pipe leak under my house so it may have happened when I crawled under there. Anyway, it feels like it gets slightly better every day….and Ive lost no range of motion at all. The worse pain is when I bend over to pick something up, or lean back or turn my head sharply. Sometimes it starts hurting if Im sitting with no support for my arm. Guess Ill take the docs advise on the old Hee Haw show- and “dont do that “!? Quote

I was a field mechanc driving a large service truck repairing heavy equipment, during my lunch break several years ago my elbow was in such horrific pain i drove to the workers comp clinic. The dr checked out my elbow, didnt x-ray it just maniulated it and then told me i had golphers elbow and said to use my opposite arm for heavy torqueing and try to rest it. He seemed to not want to help me or give me guidance on what to do for the pain, i think he thought i was joking. 2 weeks later i had elbow surgery where they had to reattach the tendon to the bone. I didnt even claim it as a workers injury on the job because if i did i would have spent weeks going to therapy and light duty or sent home to collect a tiny comp check. Before ya know it it would have been months later before they would have given me an mri and then surgery if that. I have seen it happen to other guys at the shop and they eventually dissapear staying at home and eventually getting let go. What i did was go to my own private health insurance, seen my own specialist, told him i hurt it doing recreational activities and please can we fix it asap because i will lose my job if i am out of work for more than a couple weeks. Well i got into surgery within a week and 2 weeks later i was at work doing light duty and after 3 weeks i was out in the field again. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted July 6, 2021 Author Super User Posted July 6, 2021 I went fishing for an hour or so today. I decided to paddle the jon boat some to hopefully loosen up the injury. It hurt at first , but eventually tapered off. I set the hook on a solid bass and fought him to the boat with no pain. Im sitting at home now with no pain. Hopefully, I wont pay for it tomorrow! 1 Quote
