I use 2 walmart ozark trial brand green and brown, a booyah frog and a regular scum frog. I caught most on a booyah frog followed by the walmart frog brown. I have not thrown the scum much as its pretty big so im scared the fish wont take it.

I use a apu garcia black max reel with 50 pound suffix 832 my rod is a Zebco 33 rod my old zebco reel came on.

Lots of good tips here and I did not know the rod might be an issue as my rod seems fine to me. The softness of the frog makes sense to me so i boiled them in water today and they all came out VERY soft. I got the boil tip from here on another subject of someone wanting to soft their plastics. It worked like a charm and cant wait to throw the frogs now that they are softer.

Is my rod an issue if so what kind of rod is good? Should it be stiff or not?

Yes the stouter the rod the better. Hammer down on the fish

That rod is not an appropriate frog rod.  My rod is a 7'4" Tatula Heavy.  Rated from 1/2 to 2 oz.  You need a heavy rod to get those fish up and out and to drive home those heavy hooks.

I have a 7 feet heavy rod I got but when I was learning bait cast reel I was terrible with it and stuck it on the zebco because it was easier to cast for me. I think now though i can try the heavy rod and do better.

Tuesday I will go out with my heavy rod, soft boiled frogs with sharpened hooks and report back if I get the fish this time. Thanks for the tips everyone.

Lure same as a frog but not a frog? So far it’s mostly all frog advice, maybe I misunderstood the question

If theyre hitting topwater but missing a frog, try a weightless fluke or senko. One of the lakes here I will double my bites over a frog by using a weightless senko or stickbait and pointing the rod tip up while twitching/reeling fast waking/walking over the surface with short pauses every so often. You can do this over the pads or weeds too but works especially good because you can let it fall into any pockets also.

As for some frog tips:

Like some others said start with some softer frogs like booyah, spro, or river2sea(or boil your current frogs in water for a few minutes and let cool to room temp), bend your hooks UP and OUT slightly so your finger will stick when slid down the frog.

When you get a bite make sure the bass got the frog and the line is tight before swinging hard. Make sure your gear is also up to the task, a stiffer MH(good for smaller people or those struggling with a hookset) or H(better for stronger/bigger people) rod will both work, I prefer 7'3' H.

Agree that the rod is a problem.

I struggled to hook/ land frog fish when I started seriously fishing frogs from my kayak. You can read what I found out here:

Some frogs definitely worked better than others (for me). In the linked post you'll find a list of my more productive frogs. I have found two other good frogs since I wrote that post: the Fish Arrow Bustle Frog, and the Deps Slither-K.

There are some presentations where a specific rod is nice, but not really a make-or-break kind of deal.

Frogging isn't one of them.

Best you could do is look for a finesse-y frog with thin hooks, but you are still trying to drive two hooks in the toughest part of the fish.

If you can swing getting a heavy/F rod it will make a big difference. If not, the advice above about trying a toad instead is good advice.
