After a great day of fishing yesterday with a favorite BFS outfit including my Daiwa PXL Type R, the reel started getting a little noisy when casting and needing frequent adjustments.  (fish photo from yesterday)

 

The southern end of Lake Champlain where I usually bass fish has heavily clay-silted water and bearings can sometimes get dirty.  I decided to flush and lube the spool bearings on a few reels I've been using a lot.  It turns out one of them on the PXL was bad, or had a chunk of something in it that wouldn't flush out.  I have a good selection of spare bearings so I replaced it.

 

I have a handy little bearing flushing tool I got from an R/C store.  I use brake cleaner to flush them out, then White Lightning bearing lube or Finish Line ceramic lube to lube them back up.  When I took the side over off the PXL, I must have set it down on a rag that was damp with brake cleaner.  The paint wrinkled!   ?

 

I just e-mailed Daiwa to see how much a replacement would be...

As soon as the 13 Metanium was introduced I ordered one immediately from Japan Lure Shop. When they were released I waited with the patience of Job. It finally arrived and not wanting to wait to get into the house, I opened the package on the bed of my truck. Removing the sideplate for a closer inspection, I dropped it on the driveway taking a big chunk off it's edge. I feel ya Brother, Brian.

Daiwa is known to have paint bubble problem, especially one that used in salt. I saw someone mention that even new Zillion SV TW paint is pretty weak and get scratched very easily.

It's not faulty paint... it was the brake cleaner.  ?

At least you learned your lesson the first time.  I should know better... I ruined the finish on my last coffee table when brake cleaner soaked through a rag I was using to protect it while working on some gun parts.

 

It's a favorite degreaser/solvent of mine but I forget how damaging it can be to some things.

Yes it is operator error but Daiwa paint can be a little bit more durable compare to say Shimano. ???

It's just some wrinkles in the paint but it will tick me off every time I look at it so...

I found a right side plate for the reel.  About twenty-four bucks, to my door.  I ordered it.

I just got an e-mail yesterday from the place I ordered the new side plate from...  They're sending me a refund because the part is out of stock.  I couldn't find one anywhere so I guess I have to live with a little bit of wrinkled paint!
