Super User the reel ess Posted June 23, 2021 Super User Posted June 23, 2021 For me, for numbers, it would have to be the hollow-body frog. I catch 2 or 3 off it every time I go when the water is warm. This probably has a lot to do with where you fish as it's great around vegetation. And there are almost always bass in vegetation. Second, I'd have to say a prop bait, specifically the Whopper Plopper 110. It has been a killer bait for me this year. I have 4 fish over 5 lbs on it thus far, the largest 7.93 lbs., also my best fish of 2021 thus far. Third, Id say a popper, like the Chug Bug. I prefer it to the Pop R because it's much easier to cast on BC gear. Quote
Biglittle8 Posted June 23, 2021 Posted June 23, 2021 Spooky jr. In bleeding shad. Lucky Craft Gunfish and Whopper in bone. 1 Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted June 23, 2021 Super User Posted June 23, 2021 Sammy in bone. Followed by a Yamamoto DShad. It can be worked like a top water and then let sink like a wounded baitfish. Quote

It's funny you say everything else is just a knockoff when those kind of prop baits have been used for musky and pike fishing for many many years. For me it depends on the body of water. Ponds = Whopper Plopper Streams = Walking baits Plastic toads also work well for me on both Quote
Frezzy Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 I mostly fish big smallmouth in a clear water reservoir up north. Sammy 115 in ghost bluegill is tops. Whopper Plopper 110 is Perch is good as well. Quote

I'm talking about all the cheap to half decent copy cats of the original patented, River2 Sea Whopper Plopper that was first designed as a musky lure then later down-sized for bass. It's overwhelming success as a top water bass and musky lure spawned a host of "copy cats" all clamoring for a piece of the money action. I have seen none of the knock-offs that come near to the quality of the River2Sea... That's why they cost $16.00. I have three Choppos, yes, they looked and sounded good but all three took on water in the body and barley float. That's what you usually get with a "knock-off" of someone else's design. Quote
txchaser Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 Initial Thoughts: Review of Teckel Sprinker Frog vs. Booyah Toad Runner vs. Homemade Teckel Sprinker Frog - Fishing Tackle - Bass Fishing Forums (bassresource.com) This frog, probably by a factor of 10. But I fish it more than any other topwater too. I'd rather be throwing a buzzbait as average weights are way higher, but often the grass doesn't allow for it. Quote
HHill22 Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 Only luck I've had with topwater lures is with the whopper plopper and a popper. Yet again, I only fish canals here in south texas Quote
Sphynx Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 I find this hard to answer without more quantifiable data available, I catch lots of fish on a buzzbait, the caveat to this being that because buzzbaits are one of my very favorite presentations I spend a disproportionate amount of time throwing them, so if you just want sheer numbers, buzzbait, but if you want something like fish/hour spent with given lure? I'd need a few years to get that information together for you. Quote
TheBasslayer Posted July 18, 2021 Posted July 18, 2021 A bluegill colored Strike King 2.5 Wakebait! I’ve caught my Pb on it and some more fish on it, and I don’t usually catch on top water. Quote

If I’m starting the day fishing top water, my first ~20 casts are with an old school clear torpedo. They’re also awesome under shady overhangs when the sun gets high. 1 Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted July 19, 2021 Posted July 19, 2021 Forgot wakebaits! Underrated but it is my best producing topwater. From 3 inch to 9 inch baits Quote
