Hi Bass Resource family,

I have a 1625 Lund Fury XL. I am looking to upgrade my trolling motor. I know I need 80lb thrust + 60" shaft length so far, however, I mainly fish rough waters on Detroit River or Rondeau Bay. Do you think it's enough? Do I need auto stow? Also, I come out to Kawartha Lakes in east end Ontario so might need a trolling motor that can handle shallow water also. Any suggestions?

Cheers!

I cannot recommend auto-stow too much.  It's that good.  You can with a push of the button stow from the back seat, no climbing back to the front and onto the deck.  I wasn't sure I should go with it, but decided to, and boy, am I glad I did.  As you age, it gets more important, too.  It has push button trim , too, which is so much better than loosening and moving a clamp, then retightening it.  With the push button trim it takes seconds and can be done from anywhere in the boat.

I have the 24 volt 80 lb thrust ulterra on my Lund 1625 Fury XL Sport. Plenty powerful and a joy to use. If my Ulterra was lost tomorrow, I'd replace it with the exact same thing.

I have zero use for auto stow...in particular when they all come with trash foot controls.  Solution to a problem that doesn't exist for me.  Most important is something that can talk to your depth finder and get through the weeds you fish.  A real footpedal is super high on my priority list.

Although I don’t own an Ulterra, I do know a couple people who have them. The features described are great…until they fail. The failure seems to be associated with using them in colder temperatures. All those tiny moving parts don’t do particularly well in “winter” type weather near freezing or below. The OP seems to be located in Toronto so this may be an issue there.

The Terrova seems to be the electric steer model of choice on deep v boats here specifically to avoid cold weather issues associated with the Ulterra.

An 80lb motor will be more than enough for that boat. My main fishing location has one of the strongest tidal flows in the country (piscataqua river) and I have an 80lb terrova on my crestliner 1650 protiller and absolutely love it. I have never needed to set the speed higher than 7 and the batteries last all day.

Ultrex is a better choice.  Spot lock, iLink, and a real pedal.

Terrova has ipilot link as well but with a remote or a pedal you can run to the back of the boat. Works better for my fishing, not for everyone.

My ultrex has a remote and phone app control as well and unlike the terrova doesn't suck donkey d$#( when you use the foot pedal.  The Terrova sucks if you have ever used a real trolling motor.
