We have quite a bit of grass on our lowland reservoirs yet every time I punch I come short of getting a bite. I honestly don’t think it’s equipment or technique it could be location but I’m going to common places you would think they would be near points in the grass, edges, deep into the grass etc.

I do only put the rod in my hand for about 30 minutes then next spot and try again for about the same amount of time am I just not milking the spot well enough or?

With punching, it’s easy to get lost in dead water, especially when most of the lake is covered in vegetation. Before you even make a cast, listen for baitfish. If you can here them feeding, you can expect the bass to be close by waiting for a meal. Fish those areas

The  way I approach a big expanse of heavy cover, Whether it is weeds or flooded timber, is to initially ignore the cover and look at the bottom contour.

Generally the fish will hang around contour changes. Find those areas, then fish the cover around it. As @Buzzbaiter mentioned I also look for Baitfish activity in the area.

Yeah I was fishing a creek channel close to the Lilly pads and just couldn’t get bit punching so went to the next set of contours which was a flat next to a rapid drop off and no luck there repeat this over and over now maybe idk what contours I should be looking for

in my experience your on the right track. you have to look for the juciest thickest cover , also irregularities. also its been my experience with flipping deep milfoil you gotta commit to it. i can flip for 2 hours with no bites the catch in 5 flips in one little spot. seth feider has a great youtube video on it. look up seth feider flipping grass.
