That topic about enjoying less expensive tackle really is what fishing is about. You got to start somewhere and my start was a Zebco 33 and Diawa ultra light combo. I swore off high end stuff in my teen and twenties but I was lying to myself .. I wanted some nice stuff. eventually I bought stuff above my pay grade and have not regretted it. I have less expensive stuff for catfishing and panfish that I enjoy and I keep push buttons for unexpected inexperienced fishing guests!

So on the cheap I have two Questions..

(1) Why is this reel so great, Would Sniper line be overkill and why do I want to try it? (really that's one question to me.)

(2) CAN YOU BEAT the elusive "Golden Bass" I caught on a older Pflueger President spinning reel and a abused 6ft China made Allstar from Academy ON A CHEAPER OUTFIT ?????

(Maybe that fish just didn't get much sun?)

20# striper caught in the Cape Cod Canal when I was 11 with a Mitchell 320 (gifted) on a bargin-bin Shakespeare rod? That count?

It has to do with enjoying fishing with something that you perceive as a great deal. Kinda like getting drunk on MadDog 20/20 or anything that outperformed your expectations... Don't we all enjoy that stuff. Maybe just me on the MD20/20.

Example: While bass fishing in a boat I watch a young kid drag a fairly large bass up the bank on a Kiddie pole ..... We heard him hollering well before we seen the fish and it's a good thing he hit at the bank.

Just after the stories my friend.

Backstory: I'd stripped the 8# mono I used for fishing Indian Lake off and was able to 'squeeze' about 50yds of 20#. Realized my rod probably wasn't up to the task of a salt-water fish and found a used Heavy power rod in the bargin bin for like $12 (this was back in the early 70s). Put a 10/0 hook on, a 12" or so dead squid on and kept casting as far as the line would let me. When that fish hit, I just prayed the reel would hold...the 320 back then was like the 308 is now - middle size reel.

20 minutes later I was able to pull it ashore...thing was almost as long as I was...and we didn't have a camera with us (was fishing with my cousin).

At 11 you McGyver'ed yourself into the best possible way to fish big and salt and it really paid off.

Great share

Thanks.

When i was around 13 yo, I caught a 8 lbs bass on a old zebco 33 and cheap fiberglass rods.

Since my dad didn't fish, it was just one of several old cheap combos laying around in the shed. I caught many fish on those cheap zebco combos, until i got a summer job and started buying better gear.

To this day, my PB LMB came on a 2 piece Shimano Stimula paired with a Shimano Sienna off the bank. It was also the rod I caught my first bass on.  I used that rod to soak bait for stripers and catfish as well.  I used it until one of the eyes lost half its inner lining.  I still remember the touch of grief I felt when I broke it down for the last time in order to put it in the trash can.

All of my biggest bass were caught when I was a kid fishing a Zebco 33 rod and reel, or perhaps my Shimano B-100 Mag on that Zebco rod, which was my first baitcaster.

As far as bass go, I don't really know, I don't keep track what rod/reel I catch with. I don't find a correlation between price and catching. I do know that my PB came on my wife's 6' Med Compre with a 2000 Stradic (The one with the wooden handle) and 6 lb XL. I still have a salt water solid fiberglass 2 piece spinning boat rod with a wooden butt that I bought at TSS (for yus New Yokers) in I want to say mid 70s or so for very little money, and it caught  so many things big and small paired with a South Bend spinning reel (Penn Greenie knockoff), ah memories...

Well guess I'll have to post it again. This is like 16 years ago... I had taken my 4 daughters down to a (muddy) pond to fish I had just bought Katie a Barbie rod. She caught a small bass* then decide it was more fun to throw sticks in the water. Well heck if she's not gonna us it...

*Photos are different trips to the pond.

Well, growing up all I had were cheap combos.  Zebco rod with a 202 for instance, but I can't say I recall what I caught on that, maybe a 2 1/2 lbs bass using a texas rig lizard.  But I do remember using my Ryobi VMag4 on a 5 ft. Berkley Lightning rod that I got as a freebie when I bought the reel from KMart.  Caught a 5 lbs bass on a buzzbait.

Why price have to do with catching fish?

Usually, it has to do with how long it will continue catching fish.

My cheapest combo, fished 10 years in salt XUL before retiring the Tica Cetus.

Rod is a long discontinued Takamiya XUL rockfish.

Best catch was a 25" snook + undersized-seatrout double on tandem 2" swim shad.

lT8nbfP.jpg

But here was the last trip I fished the reel - my 2-day limit (minus 1) on arriving the first night, before and after midnight, all 17-22"

I4IHXeh.jpg

My buddy's wife with her last limit on our last night, and there's a 20" fish there (Lou and I weren't fishing, we limited out that morning before breakfast).

She liked fishing this combo so much Lou was on the computer that night ordering her a matching Major Craft XUL rockfish.

I'll throw in, at 19, caught my then-PB largemouth, 6-1/2#, on Daiwa Minicast

(also, didn't take long to fish through that reel on white bass).

Not exactly my cheapest combo but I had a Shimano Sahara 750 and an All Star rod.  Total cost was about $120.  Anyway, I caught a 40±lb blue catfish on a rattle trap with 8lb Yozuri Ultra Soft.   It took me forever to get this fish in.  The line never broke but I destroyed the rod and the reel in the process.

Indeed, anything caught on a pocket fisherman earns you  double bonus points
