Right spot. But the definition of “spot” is very problematic. A spot can fish just one guy. Or it could fish 50 guys. People get too caught up in a tiny specific place, that’s where bait and technique starts to matter more.

Back in my single days, you had to be in the right spot. If there were no(or few) ladies there, you were limited. Now, sometimes the competition was tough so trying to find out what they were biting was the key. But, you can't catch them if they aren't there.

Location..like Tom said.

Very simple answer. Just ask yourself WWWRB do? " LOCATION"  Best lure in the perfect color at the optimum speed & depth won't catch fish that aren't there.

So the "consensus" is place, which I agree. Can't figure why soooo many pro's went with bait.

There's no money in endorsing spots on public lands.  But they can pay some bills endorsing baits.

Didn’t think of it that way, but you’re right of course!

I don't worry about time so much.   I fish when I can.  If I'm in the right place (the fish are there) then I figure it's the right time.

In my opinion "time" or time of year dictates what location the fish are in, Shallow water feeding, offshore ledges, Docks, etc that in turn determines what bait I can most efficiently use to cover that water.

The bass are always hitting somewhere, our job is to find somewhere!

When fishing smaller bodies of water the bass are just everywhere . Just put the trolling motor on go and you will be fishing where the bass are . Even then , bass position themselves differently day to day and sometimes hour to hour . Sometimes bass like to be on points , tips of laydowns , mouths of coves...Then at other times they are inside cuts , inside laydowns , inside coves . They are predictable in their unpredictability .

I got on this train a while ago and simply refuse to get off ~

Right place.

Right time.

Right thing.

And for those of us who have done some saltwater fishing,

inshore, off shore & virtually anything in between,

It's The Law.

Fish Hard

I agree.   My problem is the Bait Monkey is always telling me, I'm in the right place, at the right time, but I need to use a different rod, reel, line and lure that I don't own.  Then I get home and buy what the Monkey wants.  Next time out he says the same thing.  When will it end?

The wrong bait can catch a bass in the right spot.  The right bait won't catch a bass in the wrong spot.  Find the spot and then figure out how to boat the fish.

Had this situation last week. Slow morning, finally got a bite flipping and caught a small one that threw my bait off. Switched colors and caught fish the next 3 pitches (all off the same group of trees). Thought I'd really figured the bait out. After thoroughly working that area and moving on, I caught no more fish on my new color.

I'd found the right spot, the color didn't make any difference.

didnt open the link dont need too. the best bait in the world is worthless if the fish dont see it.

Location all day long! Fish congregate to certain areas based on structure, cover, season, lighting, etc. Taking these into account helps us anglers locate fish attracting locations. Some places plain dont have the necessary features to support life so fish won't be there. Meaning the "right" lure won't work with fish that aren't present. I firmly believe, within reason, you can throw just about anything as long as it matches the conditions presented and ensuring the lure is worked properly. It's all about the presentation itself. One angler will catch them on a spinnerbait in submerged wood, one on a crankbait, and one on a jig. Lure selection is less important than location I believe, confidence and presentation of that lure is where its important.

always the right spot. If you are throwing a spinnerbait or a squarebill in the right spot, both will usually get bit, although one may get snagged less due to cover or look better due to water clarity. Same as a jig vs texas rig. Both work really well in the right location, but jigs come through wood better and texas rigs come through grass better, not to mention that jigs target a little larger fish but you may miss some smaller bites, where a trig will get you more bites but less likley for a bigger fish to hit it. Its usually the spot thats most important first. and there can be multiple spots that are good that day, not just one. for instance a point can be really good, but then you see shad jumping around and getting chased in a small cove by bass. location is by far most important!

I just KNEW that KVD would agree with me on this one.  ;  )  (Right spot)

Similar to what I was thinking. If I'm on the same page as KVD I must be right.

'Tis better to throw the wrong bait in the right location than to throw the right one in the wrong location. You can throw the kitchen sink to to avail in a place with no fish.
