I recently talked with a store manager of a popular sporting goods store I've shopped at for years.                                                         He told me that the trend in bright colored rods and Reels was starting to fade out.                          He said" expect to see fewer lime green, orange, yellows and other bright colors on many of the newer rods and reels coming in".                                        He also said that Shimano, with the new Vanford reels is leading the way here. Dark colors and not too flashy.                                    Personally, I'm kind of relieved. I've always kind of preferred more traditional looking rods and reels, but, all of them will catch fish, and if you like the bright colors that's your choice.                                                          If any of this is true, we should expect to see more toned down colors on tackle next year.              For many, it may not matter at all, just thought I'd throw this out there.                                    Any thoughts or opinions?  We'll have to wait and see....

Always preferred dark colors in my rods because I look at the rod all the time fishing, reels color isn’t important to me.

I do not like neon colors or camo.  Those always look like toys to me.  They remind me of a spoiler on the back of a front wheel drive, 4 door sedan.

Having said that, I don't really care about the looks when I go to buy a new rod or reel.  If it's ugly, but it functions well and the price is right, that's all that matters.

I am with you. I like the darker more traditional colors for my rods and reels. I won't buy any of the bright flashy color rods and reels.

???

Can't match the yellow, but I can match the rest.  :teeth:  Hate yellow rods, but I do like that yellow reel.

I like black reels, but prefer a little color trim on them.  Not a fan of white or silver rods.

What can I say, I love trim colors

I'll have to admit my new Zillion is my least-favorite-looking casting reel.

But form follows function...

I'm working on improving that - I didn't like the Zaion star drag, either, and found the last color ZPI star drag out there...

Not fond of festive rod colors, and there's a plague of them in recent new glass fly rod blanks.

My daughter just ordered some bright blue Crocs for me this afternoon.  If they fit and are comfortable, I will have to order the purple ones, too.  :lol1:

Nothing personal but I just cant do it! This is why I never bought a Carrot Stick. When I see that green on Lew's, 13 fishing or Googan Rods I think of Buzz Lightyear..... I was too old for him also.

I think it's  a trend in low-end tackle to use bright, spashy or unusual color to differentiate their combos in the low-end market.

Rod or reel color has never entered the equation in my decision.  If I pick up a neon rod and I like the way  it feels I buy it.  If I don’t like how it feels I don’t buy it.  However, I do like white rods.  I like my carbon light 2.0 a lot for looks and feel.

also somthing to be said about the traditional colors like st.croix produced

I went through a stage when I was a kid in the late 70's and early 80's where everything my mother or father got me was orange or maroon. A skateboard, my jacket, my shoes, a freshly painted bike, a adidas jump suit (yes jumpsuit). My mother's car and my best friends mother's car. Although I was grateful for everything that was provided inside those colors just wore me thin.  To this day I will purchase nothing in those colors, Lime and olive green and baby blue are out but deep forest green is a winner to me.. I know it's silly but it's my silly way.

I figure I can get used to the color if the rod or reels works properly and has what I am looking for.

Color doesn't change how a rod or reel fishes, probably was just a fad. Color is not important to me.

It should be obvious the statement is true for Everybody.  Something that has always floored me in the sport is the brand loyalty above all reason.

Nobody is going to pick their tackle because of color.  They're going to pick their tackle because of budget and features.

Within a range of budget and features, color then might become a preference between two brands, and that's what the makers are banking on - it's not because people are faddish - the fad is from the makers.

In the case of aftermarket upgrades/changes.  People may not like the handles, spools, star drags that come on their reels (a number of people complain about Daiwa's spool tension knob).  Buying those parts puts them in a world of trim and  color anodize tech that can add a man-jewelry factor to their tackle.  But they made the choice because of function.

Very few things are really that new in this old sport.

Agree with this ^^

As you can see, my combos are all over the color spectrum, but it’s actually pretty easy for me to know which combo gets what line type and dedicated lure presentation by the character on the spool cover.
