Hello all,

While this may be my first post, I have been reading the forums here for a long time. Though never having an account, I've had many opinions over the many posts that I finally decided to make an account. Now, on to my first question:

I am looking for a dedicated texas rig rod. I plan to never use a weight heavier than 1/2 oz. bringing the overall weight of the presentation to just under 1 oz when paired with a 3/0 or 4/0 hook and a rage craw or worm. The depths I fish in are always 20 feet or less with this technique, often through grass and light brush/timber (such as fallen trees). I normally use straight 50 lb braid, and every once in a while I'll go braid to leader.

The rods I have been looking at are as follows:

Daiwa Tatula Elite AGS

Shimano Expride

Megabass Orochi XX (Braillist)

Daiwa BLX JDM Sensitive

Shimano Poison Adrena

G. Loomis GLX

Megabass Destroyer P5 JDM (X-Bites or Dark Sleeper)

Other suggestions are welcome (please include length/power/taper etc.

Browsing though tackle warehouse can be a bit overwhelming but I'm hoping the community can help me out with this one. Thanks,

Curious as to why so heavy on the braid?  I use 50lb on my frog rod

I currently use 50lb braid because for the time being, I throw t rigs on my jig and frog rods. The hope is to be able to get a dedicated t rig and light jig rod so that I can go to straight flouro if in clear water, or 30/40 lb braid to leader.

Custom rod with the highest quality jig & worm 4 to 5 power MH+ blank, handle and reel locking ring/fore grip materials and rod seat, guide train, length, colors etc , etc is well within your budget and compromises.

Make sure the builder knows what reel and line you prefer using.

Alex owner of ALX rods made rods for me, offered 90 day trail period and life time warranty.

Tom

PS, take a look at Dobyns High end DRX 724C.

Of what you listed I would go with the GLX and if you can find a NRX on sale, scauf it up

If I go with a loomis, what product code is ideal? The 894? 873?… I’m looking to throw up to one ounce as sometimes I fish 20-25 feet with some current. Also, ideal lengths range from 7’2” to 7’6” for me. Any suggestions on taper between fast and extra fast?

I would go 894.  Most go with the jig rod, but I prefer the MBR'S. While technically not a 1 ounce rod, for what you described and that you are throughing 1/2 ounce, but the rod that satisfies 85% of that you want

Even if your budget were less I would go custom. Spec out what YOU want

I’ve heard ALX and DVT do customs. Which one f those would you prefer? Other suggested are welcome.

I have two setups for t-rigs and jigs. I use my Brailist for 1/2 oz t-rigs , and 1/2 oz. and up jigs, I really like this rod super comfortable and loads up great. For 3/8 oz jigs and anything lighter than 1/2 oz I have a IMX pro 893, this has become my favorite rod for 1/4 oz T-rig, super comfortable to use all day. With that being said i have a couple Exprides (frog rod and jerk bait rod) and I don't think you can go wrong here either. Good luck.

Well, thanks to FryDog, I just pulled the trigger on an 854C NRX for $435. Seems like the best value of the rods I listed, and fits 80-90% of the fishing I’ll be wanting to do with it. I’m sure it’ll work excellent for 1/4 to 1/2oz weights with a 3/0 hook and craw or worm. Thanks to all of you who commented, and thanks to FryDog for bringing that deal to my attention. I’ll try to not set the hook on every piece of grass or rock my bait touches lol

I had all mine made locally here in a suburb of Minneapolis.  If you are close to a builder that would sway me.  I see lots of good reviews of DVT, but have no personal experience with them.  Not sure where you are located and whom might know one near you.
